Do you know what kind of boat Leicester trader is? I saw it moored there and wondered what flavour of keel it is. built 1953 by Dunstons at Thorne 82'6" x 14'6" the last "Trent" size barge built and about the only one left in original state. In my Richard Dunston Ltd book "Leicester Trader" is on page 75 next to a sea ship in the harbour, and as dimensions I read 81'6" x 14'6".
Maybe due to the heat over the years, the boat has gained 1', after her visit to the yard it almost looks like a brand new keel .
Peter.

left Newark this afternoon (2.15 ish) and ran through Town bridge. Before going I removed the port light box as both Les and Tony D had reckoned if I did touch that would be the point of contact (removing it gives an extra 6 or 7 inches clearance) didn't need to .... went through without touching anything ...... Peter and Jane gave me a 10 out of 10 Noticed that Les was taking photos/video as we went through so I am hoping he will let me post them on here..... there is a film by somone else, of me going through the bridge upstream but unfortunately it is only viewable by members of a closed group so I can't put it up here. Now at Cromwell going down river to Torksey tomorrow.

Spent the night at Newark opposite the castle...... excellent micro pub called "just beer" just 50 yards from the lock sells only beer from local craft breweries and proper draft cider. Joined the Sunday "church service" group (like the "old gits club" that I go to in Benfleet..... one of them is Les Reid who runs the "Leicester Trader" museum boat at Newark Excellent night !!! Just discovered the nice action video of your boat going through Newark bridge, very nice to see her going like that.
Hope the way back will be just as pain-free.
Peter. that's grand Peter, I tried to put a link up but I couldn't do it (I'm bloody hopeless at faceache ...... and not much desire to be any better either !!)

the dimensions I was quoting came from the leaflet that I got from Les Reid spent quite a long and interesting time on board her, looking through some of the incredible archive of photographs that he has. I donated one of the deck pump caps that came off Sabina ..... probably installed when she was trading in Essex 55/60 years ago ....... cast in Wivenhoe (also a famous boat building town)

I hope to meet him if I'm ever in the area.

The 'new' locks on the Trent were built to take 4 x 'Trent size' boats in one penning - 1 x powered barge (always referred to as 'tugs' by Trent boatmen, and having minimal carrying capacity) plus 3 x dumb boats (like 'Leicester Trader'), and until BW lengthened all the old Trent size 'tugs' to around 110' in the 1950's to increase their carrying capacity to a bit more than one Trent size dumb boat, it was normal practice for each powered barge/tug to bring 3 x dumbs upriver from Hull. After the motor barges/tugs were lengthened the standard, maximum tow up the Trent from Hull throughout the 60's and 70's became 2 x dumbs instead of three because there wasn't room in the locks behind the (lengthened) powered barge for the 3rd dumb boat. Overall, total carrying capacity of the tows remained about the same due to the increased tonnage capacity of the 'tugs', but there was a cost saving of one dumb boat's skipper and mate's wages plus the overheads of equiping and maintaining the 3rd boat in each tow.

Plenty of boats passing through sutton stop, mainly in the morning but very busy yesterday. No real problem with levels here either, still down about 6 inch. rain tonight apparently. At Norton Junction at the mo, was sunny all day and then about an hour ago there was a light shower for about five minutes. This stopped and now there is a very stiff breeze, and much cooler and cloudier weather blowing in.
