Some of the comments are quite incredible don't you think?
Who'd have thought a system created 200 years ago for an illiterate work force could cause so much 'soul searching' by modern man.
Nick's comments were spot on.

I was considering pointing out (again...) to Alan F that top gates do not have "gate paddles". They are called "centre paddles". On the Grand Union. But I won't.
You can't have two sets of gate paddles on a lock. It doesn't make sense from a maintenance point of view. Send a man to fix a towpath side gate paddle he ends up scratching his head is it top or bottom.
Ground paddles. Centre paddles. Gate paddles. No confusion. Simple and sensible.

True but if you are sending someone out to fix a paddle you need to make sure he gets the right one otherwise it wastes time and could lead too easily to problems.

Dammit!! I knew I shouldn’t have ventured over to the Anal Forum. 5 pages of drivel on how to get from one side of a lock to the feckin other! give me strength, losing the will to live half way down the first bleeding page. Do yourself a favour,if thinking of going to have a look don’t bother

So does a Slacker or Penstock Penstock a channel that water flows though? Wonder no more - it's us oddballs from the Flatlands having another name for a device controlling flow. www.ousewashes.info/sluices/slackers.htmGood website that is worth a firkle about on Site designed and written by:- Eddy Edwards Please note, I am NOT Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards who represented GB in the winter Olympics in 1988, coming last in ski-jumping, attaining celebrity status as a result. The Middle Level Commissioners use all three descriptions on their navigation notes and lock side signage - no excuse for confusion yet still lots of lazy bastards leave the slackers up at Ashline Lock

Wanted posted suggesting the OP gets insurance, lolz! And perhaps some bearded "Syrian refugee" children to live in his house. Anyone else's house but Wanted's, eh?

I liked the 'chuffed to bits' comment. Obviously a curtain-twitcher.

The Forth and Clyde is all gate paddles, no ground paddles. If there is/are a top gate paddle(s), there are usually gate paddles on the bottom gates as well. Anyway, if he's sent to fix a ground paddle, how does he know whether it's top or bottom? Same confusion, unless top or bottom is specified.
