It seems cart even lied about bread being bad for wildfowl www.theswansanctuary.org.uk/cause/swan-sanctuary-statement-ban-bread-campaign/this is is the bit that I found really interesting The original initiative to try to stop the public from feeding bread was led by the Canal and River Trust. They used a market research company rather than scientific research. In our opinion, there are far better ways for a charity that is concerned about waterfowl to spend their donations β the obvious choice being pollution which is evident on almost every river and canal. Bread has been fed, in moderation, for hundreds of years with no evidence of ill effect β it is only a very recent, albeit false, perception that bread is harmful to waterfowl. Interestingly, if you go to the Canal and River Trust website, there is a short video that has an expert angler explaining how to fish with bread as bait. so the whole campaign was a trick to get the public to phone for their "free" duck food. When they rang for the food, they would get the hard sell to join the friends scheme. At best deceitful, but could be considered fraud especially as it isn't based on any scientific evidence.

To much bread looks pretty grosse floating about..but down here bread was banned for ducks as it encouraged gulls and rats that snacked on young ducklings. Stopping people chucking bread is denying them a pastime thats gone back to the good ole days..I once saw 2 doddery ole ladies well into theirv80's feeding bread to ducks. They had their handbags under one arm and supported by sticks had huge smiles on their faces..their 'carer' a young man hovered around anxiously...it brought a smile to he faces of all watching. Ive seen mums with kiddies get in trouble for breaking this stupid rule.
At home here the flocks of jackdaws do not appear to have come to any harm by the copious amounts of bread one of my neighbours puts out..our only issue is the rats it attracts. I feed the birds anything they are likely to eat...

It shows how cart cynically lie and manipulate for their own ends. It seems that other organisations are catching on to how cart operate.

I don't think people should feed swans at all. Not because of their health but because it turns them into aggressive beggars. Ducks and other smaller fowl and birds its OK but not swans.
So what if a few swans can't survive without humans feeding them?
That's called "nature"

Very interesting Kris thank you! I thought when that campaign started and all the sandal wearing vegans on this marina became obsessed with posting leaflets on the noticeboard & telling duck feeding kids off for feeding them bread... what a load of old crap!

Hope you don't mind kris, but I'm putting a link to the report on CWDF Rog Not at all Rog , I think we should all publicise the reality about cart. It's up to us all as ambassadors of the waterways to tell anybody who will listen what's going on with cart. Before it's too late and they have run a wonderful part of all of our heritage into the ground. Cart need reminding that they are our waterways.

Yes but if bullshitting about the health of swans resulted in crt getting more people interested this could possibly result in more cash to spend on the canals...

A few years back I did a bit of Googling to try to find out the truth about feeding ducks with bread. I seem to remember it all came down to a very flaky study which came to the conclusion that it sometimes causes βangel wingβ. I wasnβt convinced by the study.
What I would agree with is not feeding them with mouldy bread. Who knows it might be the mould which causes problems
