I took a good clout on the way out to the Great Ouse, it did make me stop and think the same as you. OK, I have Mrs G for company, but, also the dog and the dwarf in tow. We will be heading back onto our river for the first weekend in September. All being well I may catch sight of JohnV Phil and hopefully a gang from pyc out on the Ouse before heading for home. Loafer was meant to be heading for the badlands too?! Loafer is IN the badlands. In Ely at the moment! The cutter and the royal standard are dear, the micro pub that used to be called the liberty bell opposite the Royal standard on Fore Hill is good, as is the Hereward getting up past WH smiths by the market square. Wildwood for good chain pasta and pizza. The lamb inn up by the cathedral is good too. Enjoy Ely, I'd live there in a heartbeat but couldn't face the A14 everyday for work

While I think if it, there is a launderette up by Ollie Cromwell's gaff, Google it and you can do your washing and step back in time

Thanks for the info, gazza! We'll only be one day in town this time, with a schedule to meet - but more leisure time on the way back. Your info noted for the return!

No problem.
The ice cream van by the Babylon gallery is good too, the Lincoln bridge into cathedral marine is named after good old Harry Lincoln of Appleyard and Lincoln fame. He had a modern works built on what was known as the Babylon site to produce Elysian fibreglass cruisers in large numbers. The original appleyard boat yard is still existant, it's behind the small foot bridge heading toward Bridge Boatyard, lot of boaty history in Ely.

My old home town had a place called Peter Crisps, everyone's wedding gift list was sorted at Crispies, from 1/2lb of ring shank nails to a canteen of cutlery along with gardening, haberdashery , cookware, ceramics and you name it in between. It's now a poxy tesco express

Coopers is a great barn of a place (part of it actually looks like an old agricultural building) a few years ago it branched out and does a lot of mail order (the catalogues turn up inside Sunday papers etc.) That is what has probably saved it, The mix of stuff is enormous from cheapo mail order crap to proper Aga kettles and Le Creuset casseroles at a couple of hundred quid each, rolls of barbwire and padded shirts, green wellies and Barbour jackets. A proper country store. I love visiting it ..... even if It does always cost me a fortune !!!

Had to sit on a stool tonight at the gig. Bit embarrassing really.
