The headline story story today is about a British backpacker being murderd in NZ. Obviously a very sad story and one which has caused conversations about it being dangerous to backpack there now. Doing a few minutes Googling it turns out that there are about 35 murders in NZ per year (at about 7 per million population). In the U.K. the rate is more like 10 per million. Also it transpires that around 60 British people get murderd each year whilst being abroad. Yet how many make it into the news? It’s dangerous to leave the comfort of your living room you know!

Never mind t'other side of the world ... how many die on our roads?
Unless it's a multiple fatality, it's simply ignored.
News via any medium is simply another form of entertainment and cannot entirely be trusted don't you think.

I suppose so.

Reading across a broad spectrum of readers' comments, such as those on TB & CWDF, and from other sites/newspapers, etc. gives you a general idea of what's going on. It's exceptionally rare for the real details to come to surface and be analysed from all angles - as we see with the blue boat sunk in that lock and the cyclist-hating fist-shaking old man outside his cottage: all shrouded in mystery and speculation and hearsay.

68% of people will believe anything they read Which makes the other 32% not sure. That’s why you can’t beat getting out there and having personal experience, something it seems we are being told is dangerous. The sad thing is as we get older and less mobile we’ll end up being sucked more and more in. My mum (98) is house bound. Her whole world now is watching TV and using her imagination. I’ve seen her so badly affected by what ahe’s seen in the news, she’s been in tears. So much gloom and doom. The strange thing is that we’ve tried to get her to watch lighter stuff, then we catch her watching Judge Rinder! [shakes head]

Yes, interestingly I find the comments more revealing than the OP normally. I suppose it’s a bit like getting to the truth by commitee. You’ve got to ask how many cyclists have been past that mans house without the ‘fist shaking’ experience?

[shakes head] My mum who had terminal major depression a few years ago used to listen to radio 4 a lot. OK so she had been listening to it for decades but some of the "news" stories are just so depressing !! I did tell her to stop listening to it and go for radio 3 instead but she was a R4 addict. She had no tv. As for myself I don't have TV or listen to the radio. I play with phone quite a lot including looking at different news outlets (sky, BBC, CNN, reuters etc) to get a general idea whats happening but I usually get out and about a lot as well (mostly boating) which helps.

I had to stop listening to radio 4 all the time, I realised I knew more about the Tory party than they did.

Pirkko has the TV on all morning - until I get home at 0920 and hit the remote 'OFF'. Finns are another remarkably brainwashed species, led into docility and being milked by their 'leaders'.

I think it’s basically ‘shit in, shit out’ . But fortunately ‘good in, good out’ usually applies. If we try to surround ourselves with good people , good things and nice places, it helps. The waterways are a good place to be which is why I’m quite passionate about protecting them so our kids can find some peace in the future. The problem is that the kids are also getting drawn into the same shit we are. Hopefully enough of them will want to carry on the good work.

I think the reason for the publicity surrounding this particular case is that it was initially a missing person enquiry and publicity was used in an attempt to locate the person. It was then still current news when it turned into a murder enquiry.
