Well, this afternoon a passing boater stopped, hooted and shouted a "Hello", and when I stuck my head out of the bow doors asked me if I wanted... a Honda Express. I guess it would be rude not so, so he's going to send me some pics later on. I bet you never thought you’d become a Honda express dealer? To be a dealer he'd have to sell them as well ... Mr Stabby is more a user Rog

Here's the Honda Express which I'm going to see tomorrow. It's only just up the road from me in Coventry. I posted this pic on one of the Facebook Honda Express groups and within a few minutes someone asked me if I would be interested in swapping it for this rather quirky VeloSolex.

That looks a worthy addition to the Mr Stabby 's Moped Museum of Curiosities. Rog

I’d keep the Honda express if I was you.

I've never seen a bike with an engine in that position nor one with arse about face brake levers. I'd do the swap, it's a no brainer. Having said that I can't see how that engine can possibly drive the chain. A shaft running through the frame, surely not?

They have a traction roller at the base of the engine which can be raised and lowered by means of a lever on top of the engine, and the roller when lowered sits on the front tyre and drives it. Shown in this video at 1:30.

They are very popular in France. I met a bloke once who had about 15 of them in an outbuilding on his smallholding.
Never got to go on one though.
Quite tempted by one of these for the toy trawler. Wheels can be useful for the beer acquisition protocol now and then.

Have you decided yet Mr Stabby ? The French machine is really quirky ... but would you prefer the Honda ? Rog

Rog I went to see it this morning, spent about an hour chatting to the bloke about not just the Honda, but also boats (he's a boater) and guitars- he'd seen my acoustic guitar through the window when he was passing so he showed me the pride of his collection, a 1968 Gibson J160-E (I think). I said I'd have the Honda when I've got some cash and we agreed a fair price. I have an echocardiogram in Coventry tomorrow at long last so hopefully DVLA will get their arses into gear and issue my licence soon, although there may be some van driving work coming up next week anyway.

I suspect you are right on both counts although it's technically a motor-assisted pedal cycle rather than a motorcycle so you'd expect to have to help it on hills sometime by pedalling. But no moped likes steep hills anyway, I doubt the Honda could cope with much more than 1 in 8 and even then only for a short time without burning the clutch out.

These sort of bikes run on LPA.

The French device enjoyed some popularity at a time when it was possible to pass your bike test on one (which largely consisted of some bloke leaping into the road in front of you and shouting 'stop!') on one day and popping down to the Triumph dealership for a coffee and a HP deal the next. The French like them because they are nuts.

Having had a reproductive relationship with a French person I can confirm that Yes they are nuts. Maybe it's just the Woman who is mad as a box of frogs but I reckon its a French thing. I suppose admitting that my own kids are partially nutters (due to their mother) is a bit bad but then as I always say "in life, you do what you do, you get what you get and you can't do, or get, nowt else"

Good luck tomorrow Mr Stabby ... although I'm sure you won't need it. Rog ETA Was it the sunburst electro acoustic ... John Lennon style ?
