Agree that Brexit will probably not happen this year, but air quality rules can be set locally, for example some German towns are going to ban dirty diesel vehicles. I think that as sorting out vehicle air pollution is politically difficult and as politicians will feel they must be seen to be doing something, I expect wood burners in cities will be an easy target as they are very much a middle class thing (at least in houses) so Labour will have no problem supporting the Tories on that. I would like healthy option/capable of getting me up to Scotland and down to Dover without hassle.. Get a horse.

Are you moonlighting for national rail? This isn't the first time I've seen you giving train info, so I'm just asking. I find it exciting to travel by train, and am impressed at the speed they go, eg. Manchester Piccadilly to Stafford in an hour, and London to York in just 2 hours. And I like hunting for cheap fares. Also we have a Two Together rail pass which knocks a third off the price for 2 adults travelling together. Playing with the idea of catching trains to Swindon and Stroud for our next trip, and B&Bing in Stroud, an unknown town to us, before continuing Sunday on to Gloucester-Cheltenham-Worcester-Stourbridge. Pirkko has never been to Paddington station before, and it could be one of those new Hitachi trains. I've never been on that railway from Swindon to Stroud which cuts right through the Cotswolds (there's a tunnel too!). Coming back we could catch a train Birmingham to Watford and creep round on 4 different Underground trains on the west side of London to get to Heathrow. Would make a change from going via the city centre. Travelling by train is civilised, sipping coffee and nibbling on a sandwich whilst watching scenery go by and keeping an eye out for canals. I like being at King's Cross and hearing the roar of the diesel engines as 125s slip away bound for exotic destinations such as Wakefield, Hull and Inverness.

I travelled in the cab of a scania low loader from Wigan to Henley ten years ago with my boat on the back. Mind you I doubt they'd let me into the vehicle again as I was talking the hind legs off a donkey so probably a road safety problem. Boat on truck me on train. Not up for the JohnV technique as am allergic to lifeboats !

How about a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV? should do the job nicely and be relatively cheap to run. If you have a drive or garage at home it can be charged at home cheaply

My sister in law started a new job today, and has decided to travel by train rather than car, as West Yorkshire can be almost grid locked at times. Going to work this morning her first train was delayed, and she quickly had to drive to a different station to catch an alternative into Leeds before changing there for Keighley. This evening she arrived at Leeds to find her connection was cancelled, and consequently had to catch a later train. She got home about 7.30pm. Let the train take the strain ! Kings Cross to York in two hours ... if the train isn't late ... if it arrives at all Trains SHOULD be great ... but the reality is very different. Rog
