FTFY. Image result for ftfy FTFY is one of those strange online acronyms that's hard to take a wild guess at its meaning. And the fact that it's only mildly popular makes it extra confusing to those who may be seeing it for the first time. FTFY stands for: Fixed That For You.19 Oct 2018

God, it sounds boring in Indonesia/Bali, loud-mouthed thicko Austrylians eating and drinking. You could have gone to Earl's Court. You could find yourself with Russian wife (Ukraine is a suburb of Russia) and a teenage girl to look after for the next 20 years! Russian women seem OK, very house proud and ambitious, and look after their kids. Why is she alone? Where's her husband? You could end up in a can of dog food! One mistake you should never make is to suggest to a Ukrainian that they are a suburb of Russia. Hell hath no fury to match the fallout that would follow such an insult.

East of Kiev, particularly in industrialised areas the majority of the population are ethnic Russians and I heard "Zdyes Rossiya" (It's Russia here) on numerous occasions in Dniepropetrovsk, Zaporozhia, Donetsk etc. Stalin's policy was to repopulate the republics largely with ethnic Russians in order to attempt to prevent any break-up of the USSR.

Back in Ostrobothnia, Land of the Barns. curious, is ostrobothnia finnish for the land of the barns? both being barn? as in Bothy in scotland? Here is a map: You see the Gulf of Bothnia, which is the northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea. Bottenviken is Swedish for meaning 'lower bay'. Öster means 'east'. "Bottenviken" was originally just "Botn(en)" with botn being Old Norse for "gulf" or "bay"; which is also the meaning of the second element "vik". botten was applied to the regions Västerbotten on the western side and Österbotten the eastern side ("East Bottom" and "West Bottom"). The Finnish name of Österbotten, Pohjanmaa, or "Pohja"-land, gives a hint as to the meaning in both languages: the meaning of pohja includes both "bottom" and "north." Pohja (bottom) is the base word for north, pohjoinen, with an adjectival suffix added. Bothnia is a latinization. A second possibility is that botten follows an alternative Scandinavian connotation of 'furthermost'. Thus, the Gulf of Bothnia would be the farthest extent of the Ocean. So, Ostrobothnia means the land on the north-eastern side of the Gulf of Bothnia. Bit chilly in Winter! Sea frozen up our way. -24 Centigrade at the moment. In local circles or communities, Ostrobothnia is often referred to as "Pampas". The word derives from the similarities in the flat landscape with the Pampas area in South America. We live in Himanka which is a bit further North, between Kokkola and Kalajoki. Himanka was in 'Central Bothnia' but about 10 years ago had to choose which town to join and opted for Kalajoki so the border of 'Northern Bothnia' was drawn down to encompass Himanka, making our next neighbour North the last 'county' of all, Lapland. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostrobothnia_(region)

Back in Ostrobothnia, Land of the Barns. curious, is ostrobothnia finnish for the land of the barns? both being barn? as in Bothy in scotland? There is a Swedish influence out this way. Finland was part of Sweden for hundreds of years. The Russians had it for 100 years from 1817-1917 (approx.) as a duchy. The Finns declared independence when Russia was occupied with its own Revolution. Finns are genetically roughly 2/3 from central Europe and 1/3 Siberians. There used to be Lapps living all over Finland but 'the Finns' arrived and soon put them in their place (ie. up North where it's even colder!) hence the many Lapp names to places. When we go to Kokkola it's a bit like being on holiday because a lot of people there speak Swedish. Swedish-Finns are rich and have nice houses which they keep impeccably clean, with tidy gardens. Finns like to fill their yards with scrap cars and other pieces of agricultual machinery, probably in the expectation that one day it will come in handy. Swedish-Finns are very loud-mouthed and want everyone to hear how much money they have. Finns are fairly quiet and claim it's because they are shy, but everyone knows it's because they are poor and not worthy to lick the boots of their Swedish masters. Finns still look to Sweden as a role model, and tried even to get their own king - from Germany - but, due to lack of interest on his part, it never happened.
