Nick, I'd say the metal Woodruff key is Phosphor Bronze. I have a few of these off of an old Stuart Turner if you need one. Also, I have a good bit of stock bar if you need some turning, and milling. I would post over there, but I couldn't be bovvered with The Plumbers shite. Stumps

Thanks all. Stumpy yes it might be PB but it looked identical in colour to the prop - but not sure what they are made of either? Anyway the chap had limited knowledge, didn't really understand the key/keyway concept and didn't know what a castellated nut was, but he seemed a quick learner. Anyway we're off out of B'ham now so the rest is up to him, but at least he can now visualise how is is all supposed to hang together.

Same as a prop I've got for a little fishing boat. It looks like the Leading Edge of the prop in the picture has well and truly, mangled a shopping trolley. If you need any help, you know where I lurk.

A lot of modern props are aluminium bronze. When I had to make one for the boat I mentioned on 'tother place I had a lot of trouble finding suitable material. (woodruff key that is) In the end I scavenged a bit of broken 1920's reefing gear and filed it down to size (took me bloody ages)

Wouldn't be brass because in a wet environment the brass loses it's zinc content leaving just copper behind. Phil
