Just got sent a text confirming work for next week, which is good although I'm sure I won't think the same when the alarm clock goes off on Monday morning. Whenever I've been away from an articulated lorry for a while I think I will have forgotten how to drive one but of course you never do. Hopefully this job will last until Easter although for now I need a month's work to pay Farmer Don for next year's mooring charge and for the Honda CB125 I'm hoping to buy, the insurance and also the CBT which I'll need to do before I can ride it- because I took my car test in 1979 I don't need one to ride the Clockwork Banana (or L plates).

Is that with your preferred company or through the agency Vince ? Rog It's the company I worked for last Winter. To be honest the money isn't the best but the job suits me in a lot of other ways, they are easy-going people, the hours are right, it's not too far away and they give me loads of free aggregate and pallets.

I'm really quite nervous when they are around. Probably goes back to when I was kicked by one when I was younger. I really want those lugworms so I think I'm going to have a grow a set. What to do though: a/ Ignore them completely, stride out purposefully, feigning confidence. b/ Pretend to be friendly towards them, make clucking sounds, say 'hello (land) horsey horsey' etc. etc. Something else? Get an old bridle and walk in the field with it in view. From what I've seen, horses even run from their owners when they see a bridle. Good idea. A halter would be the easiest thing. A lot cheaper than a bridle. £5 for a halter from Decathlon.

Maybe just the walk around rattling a metal bit that might work!
All this talk of bridles, halters and all that gear takes me back somewhat. Sisters had ponies and did dressage and things. I hated it but luckily got to play with boats.
Did occasionally engage in mucking out the stables in the yard of our town house. The smell of piss and shit and straw bedding. How lovely. Not.
I can ride but never got involved in cross country or dressage or anything flash. Trotting poles was as showy as I ever got.
The two golden rules were do not walk close behind the animal as it may kick out and also if feeding by hand hold your hand completely flat or it might pick your fingers off.
My mum did get kicked once when cleaning rear feet of one of the ponies. She got slightly in the wrong place and bang. Not serious but they can do some damage.
I fell off now and then but never got kicked.
Had my own pony called Gypsy for a while but I was not that interested so she was rehomed.

I took lessons so I could ride out with Jane (she's ridden horses since a girl).
I enjoyed it but never really felt a connection with them ... the horse always remained a mystery to me.
Then very oddly and suddenly I became allergic to them ... my skin comes up in blisters even when contacted with clothing Jane went riding in.
She ended up having to get changed at the stables so as to not bring horsey stuff home.
My Grandad always used to say "Bite at one end, kick at t'other, and bloomin' uncomfortable in the middle"

On balance horses are best used for towing purposes rather than riding.

The only real connection I have with horses is that I'm hung like one.

Just doing some handling trials on Dulcinea and there arrr a few plebs around in boats.
I had to call in close air support and have them strafed as have run out of torpedoes again.
How shocking !
It seems to have cleared them. No survivors. Always good.
