The side pond paddles are side paddles. It was an old school BW chap who told me these details. Also a few other interesting things about the way the canal is built. One of the ones which really flustered a few on canalworld was the windows in the paddles. Square holes cut in (wooden) paddles to run water through in order to maintain levels below when there is no bywash and specially when the next lock down is deeper. People don't believe that there would be holes cut in the paddles but there were. Not allowed with composite materials but when they were wood it was no problem. My mooring is between L35 and L36 on the Rochdale, leaky cill on 35 so they fitted a gate feed in 36 to keep it topped up. It doesn't quite.

Gate paddles are on the bottom gates. If the top gates have paddles on them they are correctly called "centre paddles". Otherwise it would cause problems. Ground paddles, centre paddles and gate paddles. That's Grand Union terminology anyway. You have to have a different term for each pair of paddles otherwise confusion will arise. In actual everyday use -- before the end of long distance narrowboat carrying (on the "Junction" - not the 'Grand Union') in 1970, and on the rare occasions when 'paddles' of any sort were being talked about rather than just being "drawn" or "dropped" -- it was "bottom paddles", "centres", and "ground paddles".

Dogless, I recall you once mentioning having a recording of a retired boater going on about the old days. Any chance of making it available on youtube?

Well we appear to have arrived at the aforementioned SLOW flight - only went up the first 2 and tied up for the day... 8 in the queue by the time it was our turn to go up. Everyone moaning about how shallow it is - and I had to bite my tongue cause it's no where near as shallow as most of the Rochdale or Huddersield ... or even the peak forest. Anyway - I've had a walk up to town (you were right it's too long a walk for ice-cream... as I've discovered to my peril with the coop 2 pizzas and a ben and jerrys for a fiver deal. the pound after the next 2 locks has a bit of space in but after that, it's chocabloc - ergo, tomorrow we'll go up 2 more locks and stay there until the punter arrives... it takes a little bit off the walk to the shops.
Thanks Telemachus for the info on the Ashby - AND kind (ish) words about ginger poofs being the lesser of two evils... I Think!

Still stuck here on the L&L, apparently they still haven't worked out how to dewater a lock! They are now pumping out the upper pound to stop the bywash working - unfortunately the lock above also has a bywash, so tomorrow morning the upper pound will be full and the problematic bywash will be flowing again!

the pound after the next 2 locks has a bit of space in but after that, it's chocabloc - One of the reasons I never mind being back on my mooring at this time of year, everywhere anywhere near shops, facilities is rammed. First day at work finished, went as well as could be expected. I presume I'm working tomorrow but they haven't texted me yet. There's a driver on holiday next week so I'll definitely be covering for him. Jo has her Mod 1 motorcycle test tomorrow so sending best wishes to her, not just for her sake but so I can get my mitts on her Honda by the weekend.

Thanks Telemachus for the info on the Ashby - AND kind (ish) words about ginger poofs being the lesser of two evils... I Think! Wait till you get to locks 7 and 8, the pound between is very low, we just about managed to get out the lock, not helped by all the gates leaking and the bodged cill repair, hopefully there are enough people coming down as going up, just be cautious about moving over if someone is coming out the lock above, you will run aground. The water point at the top is next to useless, best to wait to the CRT yard at Hartshill, its on the off side between bridges 31 and 32, much faster that one. I wouldn't dream of attempting to go up and down the Ashby in two days, will be long days, if you have time you should do it, three days is easy enough. If you fancy a nice curry then Herbs and Spice at the end of the high street in Atherstone is good, can take your own beer in also, its just near Aldi.

Tell the wankers to get a couple of stop planks in at the bottom end of that lock, . . then water coming down from above will all run off down the last (bottom) pound without running back into the chamber.

Hello Twerp, good to see you back!
One of the boaters on my mooring went from here to the end of the Ashby in a day although he did leave at 02:30.
