Here's my weekly round-up of news from the throbbing metropolis of Stretton-under-Fosse. Just finished my second week back at work and I'm bored with it already. It really is just a means to an end. I've done nine days and I work on the basis of earning £100 a day after stoppages, meaning so far three days have paid Farmer Don for the mooring and I've earned half the cost of the new motorcycle. I need to do another week and one day then it's paid for. Then two days to pay for the CBT for myself and my son in October, then I can start building up savings for the 2022 cruising season. There is much debate about toilet types, cassette or pump-out etc and I believe some folk even shit in a cardboard box. But I heard about an exciting new development in sanitary hardware this week, the macerator fish toilet. I don't know how they work, presumably you keep some fish in the holding tank and they gobble up the No 2s, then you replace them in the canal and get some new ones when they're full? I will have to look into this. Some strange developments on Facebook. One of my oldest Facebook friends is a girl who I shall refer to as "R". I've never met her, she comes from the very early days of Facebook when you would add a friend simply on the basis that you played online Scrabble with them and for the novelty of having a virtual friend, especially as I'm a bit of a Billy-no-mates anyway. Her posts occasionally appear on my newsfeed and so I've watched as she graduated from University, started work, had boyfriends and break ups, settled down with a long-term partner, bought a house, had a child, split up etc etc etc. She is very beautiful and probably in her mid-to-late 30s now. I rarely posted anything on her timeline, just the very occasional thing such as when she visited a steam railway I told her an anecdote about an acquaintance of mine and then out of the blue last weekend I got a message asking me how I was followed by this exchange. So I'm thinking "WTF? Is she coming on at me?" I'm not entirely sure where to go with this. I'm also not quite sure why she would seek sanctuary with someone old enough to be her Dad. I can only imagine she's been looking at my pics, and my lustrous mop of boyish chestnut hair has made her go weak at the knees. What should I do? I don't know much about much but can claim a fair level of experience in such matters. Carry on benign conversations for a little while. Light with a smattering of wit, you'll understand. Instinct will tell you when the time is right to up the stakes. Can't recommend an exact 'line' but it (obviously) shouldn't be too loaded but at the same time, should enable the young lady to read between the lines. It's important that it contains a subtle message of non-commitment. Then, she'll either recoil in horror that an old friend turns out to be a dirty old man and disappear or otherwise, there's a fair chance of some fishy business going on. It's important that the stakes are raised fairly quickly. Otherwise, she'll settle into 'good friend' mode, this is difficult to break out of. Equally though, one shouldn't barge in too quickly, with all guns blazing. Choosing this moment is the key to it all. If the conversation presents an opportunity, take it.

I'm thinking "just don't go there", it's a level of complication my life could do without at the moment. She's gone a bit quiet now so I'm thinking perhaps she was just having a "time of the month" moment.

She's gone a bit quiet now so I'm thinking perhaps she was just having a "time of the month" moment. I have a similar dilemma at the moment. I met a girl from Tywyn on Plenty of Fish. She's a couple of years older than me but well good looking, close to being a stunner. While we get on really well, our conversations suggest she can't wait for me to invite her to the cave for wine etc., I'm holding myself back. She's made it quite clear that commitment isn't at the top of her agenda. All good eh? Well, she's into cars, fashion, eating out etc. All things I either dislike, have no interest in, or despise. All I want to do is kayak, surf, fish, walk. Years ago she'd have been back at the cave before now but I don't know.

Well the news here is that the new kayak is still in the process of shipping from South Africa. Frustrating but there you go. The better news is that I've agreed to sell my old one for far more than I imagined it might be worth. More good news: my parents visited last week and brought me 2 old Manchester City shirts. I was going to bin them but had a quick look on Ebay to see if there was any value. Glad I did because one of them is very rare. I placed a tentative add on a Facebook page I found yesterday. Today, I have two interesting parties bidding against each other. £250 for 2 old football shirts, the world has gone mad! Great for me though, sale of the shirts and old kayak, 3 days gardening, new kayak is paid for.

Looks to be a nice tidy platform.

Looks to be a nice tidy platform. Yes it's a nice compromise. Long and narrow enough to get up a bit of speed but not as narrow as a true speed machine, which compromises stability. Lots of storage options for camping trips away, although that will need to wait until next year.

Spent most of yesterday over the three tins supping a very nice beer, met up with a boater I always bump into, he is from beduff but has been up north for a while, an interesting character with lots of stories about his past, ended sitting on the towpath drinking with him, can just about remember staggering back to the boat.
Heads a bit sore so a fry up has been consumed then it’s clean up and head back to the house. Boo!
Normal life calls once again too quickly

Been quite cloudy this week, but I've not needed to run the engine at all since we arrived on Wednesday lunch time. Today we want showers so have to run the engine (even though batteries don't need it) and it's the first direct sunny day we've had... Sods law Rog
