If the calorifier needs replacing, we will have an immersion heater as a second option.

My first priority was to heat water without engine running. The Alde does not and never has heated the water. I'd therefore prefer to replace with a modern system which does heat the water ... whether that's a new modern boiler, or the old Alde with a new calorifier I shall see and be advised. Rog But the point is that the Alde could heat the water, it’s just not plumbed to do so. If you are going to go for an instant water heater then you have the problem of where to put it and it needs a flue, which is a bit of a hassle. You can’t put it in a bathroom. They eat gas and you might find that the main gas feed from the gas locker is inadequate to pass enough gas. Your gas consumption will increase significantly. And having done that, your central heating is still kaput. Probably the easiest solution is to get a twin coil calorifier. Calorifiers don’t last for ever so it’s not a complete waste. That is of course presuming you don’t already have one just with the second coil unconnected. And the repair the Alde and plumb it in via selector valves that allow heating only, hot water only, or both. Or if you like, replace the Alde with a Webasto heater thingy (at least the diesel they use is much cheaper than calor gas).

Good point about the calorifier. Worth checking if it is a single or twin coil job. Quite easy to see if it is easy to see.

This is the option I would take also. we have the tall alde boiler set up in the same way, can heat the tank in 15 minutes and uses very little gas, or use the engine when cruising. heating is good for extra heat in the bedroom, usually just knock off all the other Rads and leave the bedroom one on. why change system when you have one in place already, very simple boilers and more than likely cheap to fix. maybe look at using the solar in the summer heat water via an element in the tank, have seen a fair few boaters doing this

Have I got this right, you want to heat radiators with bottled gas? If so, I'd suggest as much overtime as possible to pay for the gas. The trip boat at Whaley Bridge was heated this way. OK, it was 71ft but a 13KG bottle of gas lasted for less than 8 hours. 4 pound odd an hour. I'd rather wear extra jumpers.

My concern would be that if the Alde is repaired (again) and the calorifier replaced so that I can heat water via the boiler and an immersion heater, I'm still relying on an obsolete boiler, parts for which are increasingly difficult to source.
I wonder if money and effort would be better spent on improving the boiler system ... I don't know but will cogitate on the matter and take advice.
Simply repairing the boiler won't help ... we need to heat water without engine running.

Is the calorifier a vertical or a horizontal type?
This makes a difference in the way they store the heat.

Not much point in a bigger, more insulated calorifier (horizontal by the way) if it's full of cold water ... it's heating the water without running the engine I'm seeking to solve, but thanks. Rog

Rog I was under the impression you did a lot of boating and therefore run the engine very often. For a boat that does not move much it's a Morco.
