We have a twin coil cauliflower plus an immersion heater.😁 What do you use to put power into the immersion heater?

Buy a house? Oops Do more boating. Insulate calorifier so it remains warm. Share showers (romantic afaik) Wash less (not very romantic) Bigger calorifier. Not much point in a bigger, more insulated calorifier (horizontal by the way) if it's full of cold water ... it's heating the water without running the engine I'm seeking to solve, but thanks. Rog Rog, do you have a stove ? what about an oil fired stove with back boiler ? of course you do cook in the summer

You're being deliberately diffic now aren't you? Hint: heat water WITHOUT running engine. Ignore other options.

I also thought he lived ashore in winter. Maybe I am missing something. I started off thinking about a bubble PJ like wot I got .... then realised 240 volt might be a problem and then thought about a drip feed stove .... but didn't think about summers ...... but I suppose a drip fed stove for vcold weather and maybe more solar for summer might be a solution ..... but not neccessarily a good one (i have been on the Hobgoblins)

Well to be fair to me I did immediately point out that the solution was to fit a Morco instantaneous water heater. I know that Telemachus would be unable to handle the incredibly ugly flue terminal thing but also worth bearing in mind that once the BS is out of the way you can just put a mushroom vent over it and incredibly bad things won't happen.

I suppose I should 'do a Dunk' and repeat my first post on the matter, underlined, in bold, and in yellow ... but I can't be arsed. I'll be looking at Morco, Webasto and the new Alde's ... I have no idea at present what's best, or even what's possible to be fitted retrospectively on a 28 year old boat. I will not be doing the job, so my only problem will be paying Rog

I like the Webasto option since I would dislike adding more gas lines (I would guess some already exist). However I gather there are safety/maintenance issues with diesel heaters as well and I can envisage a lot of disruption from an installation of an entirely new heating system. Hot water from solar seems great except if the summer is rubbish like this year and also isn't that asking more from solar than it has to give? (Assuming the primary purpose of solar is to provide lighting). Gas is very on and offable; as has been noted GCH uses a lot of gas. But as an occasional hot water system it seems to be the winner based on levels of installation grief.

I suppose there might be asbestos in there in the cabin partitions but it's unlikely to be the brown type.

My first priority was to heat water without engine running. Rog I've always found that a kettle on a Primus stove, or a gas ring, works quite well !

Also 1993 is not that long ago really.
Odd coincidence I was singing a meatloaf song to myself randomly this morning but it was the "torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike" one. Not listened to that for years or hummed it but it just came into my head for some unknown reason.

Rog I think you are getting carried away by the solar panel and starting to over-think the non running of engine scenario. I think you just have to accept that you'll need to run the engine to provide hot water and that the diesel used to do this will cost little if anything more than bottled gas would, as Ricco pointed out gas is a very expensive way of heating water.

I agree ... however we like to take showers regularly. I had solar fitted so I don't need to run the engine other than when cruising, which now creates the hot water for showers problem Rog
