Apparently I am helping with a garden this pm.. Halloween fever has hit daughters street ..there's a local competition. I thought I'd rock up with Iggy and the Wolf and supervise mayhem..... What could possibly go wrong? Never really bothered with Halloween even in the Army it passed us by, its an American thing done to make up for their lack of history

I suppose any excuse for a party's no bad thing. However the trimming up, costumes and pumpkins seem to have appeared in the last twenty years or so ... certainly wasn't any kind of 'celebration' when I was a school kid. Of course All Souls Eve was explained, and we made the occasional witch's hat at school, but that was about it. These smart phones are handy aren't they ... snap time at work and the world at my fingertips Rog

Pottered about today, but got a couple of jobs finished off. One being to extend the under gunnel LED lighting right throughout the boat. Before, it stopped at the kitchen and was only on the far side of the bedroom. So now it extends along the corridor (switched by the same switch as the main living area, or the keyfob) and both sides of the bedroom (switched from the bedroom, and dimmable of course). The joys of Empirbus means I could take the feed for the corridor from the aft node, whereas the main living area is powered from the front node. A bit of jiggery pokery with the Empirbus configuration software makes it all work correctly, including being switched on by the "all lights on" (for tunnels) button at the steering position, and off by the "all lights off" button (for after tunnels) and the "going to the pub" button by the front door. Only trouble is that it shows up that the carpet needs vacuuming and the bedroom shelf needs dusting! When the whole boat is lit up it does take getting on for 10A, but on the other hand with 600Ah of Li batteries, who gives a shit? Also nipped up the stern gland slightly, as it was dripping a bit after we tied up in the marina. Felt slightly "off" today, and Ruth at the marina had a positive Covid test the evening after we bought diesel from her on Monday, but my test shows negative tonight so maybe I'm just lethargic.

They couldn't destroy Parliament either.

The only boat lights that really speak to my design language are my old Davey jellymoulds. I love 'em. Can't get enough of these honeys. Placed over a led downlighter one gets the advantage of the modern and classic at the same time. Wonderfully ambient. (Photo is lit by my phone torch!) I am also partial to the old teak reading lights they fitted on some American motoryachts. They speak well and are nicely produced items if a little hard to come by. Not got one on this boat but have a few on other craft.

Originally the lights in Shapfell were jelly moulds, unfortunately all but one (in the loo) were replaced with fluorescents sometime before my ownership. I replaced the two strip lights in the main cabin with the slightly more elegant and preferable 2D Labgear ones but at some point I want to change those for LED's

What could possibly go wrong? Never really bothered with Halloween even in the Army it passed us by, its an American thing done to make up for their lack of history The modern festivities of Halloween are both a cultural vestige of a major pagan festival (Samhain) celebrated throughout Europe and also a Christian appropriation of the event designed as part of a wider strategy to extinguish the earlier religion. It presumably made it to America as a tradition since most people of the era would have considered themselves Christian. In secular society it has lost all significance and, as you observe, has become nothing more than a bit of fun for the kids. However the 'trick or treat' thing isn't entirely without basis in the older traditions.
