Still chilly. Fire going. Cast ne'er a clout til May be out. In terms of fleet management I think the ideal is to have the red herring canoe, the orangina kayak and the Laisse Les Dire floating electric beer drinking platform all kept on the cabin top. Nothing towing because as the learnèd kris has already pointed out it is a nuisance towing things. Also the colours are quite nice. I am a fan of yellow orange and red nice and bright.

Also if I am thinking of going on the canal towing a dinghy is a basic annoyance. I met a geyser once who routinely towed a dinghy and sometimes his daughter rode in it. One day, while she was not in it, it caught on a lock gate and rolled upside down.
Not ideal !

I finally got El Cuadrito's paddle displayed. Brought a tear to my eye thinking about him drowning, grasping for air but only finding water then sinking with endless bubbles while I was trying to find my phone. El Cuad. The greatest paddler. He paddled like a dancer. And danced like a paddler. A legend in someone else's lifetime.

Grey and cloudy this morning, but no fire as it isn't really cold. Think we may move on and risk getting rained on. It was a lovely warm sunny day yesterday despite the forecast indicating 30% to 40% chance of rain all day. We only saw one short heavy shower ... hope that proves the same today 🤞 Are you thinking of returning to canal life Admiral ? I thought you'd sworn against muddy ditches ? Does afford greater mileage for a wanderer. Rog

I realised it was doing time on an inner London ditch which put me off canals. Thinking of winter on the GU as it means more Boating than the River. The River is lovely but going out in high flows in the same place in a small open Boat is actually quite hazardous and rather boring.
For safety I feel the canal might in fact be a better bet. Not been up Rickmansworth way for many yars. I used to quite like it around there.
No urge to do the narrows but the GU is a great canal and my 40x9ft launch is a very nice platform on wide canals.

Cast ne'er a clout til May be out. However it is recommended one changes one's underpants some time before then. Hence the less well-known saying But mind ye cast many an undercracker preferably at least once a week.

Wow this is a big U turn. Not that there is anything wrong with U turns! The Thames can be lovely, definitely the best river. But there is so much more variety on the ditches, especially the further away from London you get. It’s a shame there is still no widebeam passage south to north though, you will be stuck on the GU but at least you can get all the way to Birmingham (although I wouldn’t really recommend going much beyond Knowle)

So it will roughly be GU between Maffers and London. No interest in going further away. Its practicality really and an eye on safety. Moored in a remote weir stream above a weir known for fatalities is possibly unideal as a winter plan. I have been living mainly on canals for 30 yars. I love the River and Limehouse cut killed the canal vibe completely but I'd like to try again. Gold licence means one can do either at will. Always quite liked the Regents section and the mainline GU. River Lea/Lee no thanks too many thieving pikeys.

Oh it’s raining. Sat pondering what to do with the cabin ceiling. Had a mushroom leak over winter that has turned a patch of the wood blackish. It’s replace or paint. Ali is quite keen to paint it white, she has noticed a trend towards this is recent years on new boats. Would be easier than replacement I suppose. Think it’ll be painted and then we can replace if that doesn’t suit.
Anyone care to suggest what type of paint? White but not glossy I think.

If you want it white and not glossy maybe a matt white paint would do it.

Lovely cruise despite being less fortunate with the rain so far. Not cold driving rain, so it was jolly pleasant and actually got to share two locks with, first a single handing fella and then a lady single hander. We watered on the slowest ever tap above Cassio Bridge lock, but a good choice in the end as our lady companion which to use the Batchworth tap. I love the run into Rickmansworth ... every possible shape and size of boat and floating home you could imagine 😁 Think a shower and the pub for food beckons as we've not yet had food. Happy wandering Admiral ... I bet the kids will love visiting new areas afloat on their visits too 👍🏻 Rog

Indeed.
I used to occupy the top mooring on the towpath side opposite the houseboats for a couple of yars. Ricky is alright.
Yes I had a message from the younger daughter currently in Fez saying she was looking forward to a proper Boat trip.
Its much better than using a small launch. Privacy. weather protection, outdoor seating, lavatory etc etc bit of a no brainer really !
If the kids want to sit inside and chill its a nice comfortable option.

Mooring at St Aines upon Thames tomorrow then train to St Epney London E1 where the kids live on Thursday then back out to Boat and a trip up to Windsor with passengers. Seems quite a wise move to me.
If someone told me 15 yars ago I'd have kids living in Stepney I'd have been like 'pull the other one' First born in Brixton second born on the Isle of Dogs.
What??
