I've got to go and drag the offspring out of inner London and have them on the Boat until Monday. School closed on Monday because of Eid. Not sure if it is Al Fitr or Al Adha. Anyway always fun having such great visitors then I take them back to the mum and she does the heavy lifting. Its mad that they are 12 and 14. It suddenly dawns upon me that one day they will be adults. Crazy world! As Mr Doolittle once said A man was made to help support his children Which is the right and proper thing to do a man was made to help support his children -but- With a little bit of luck, with a little bit of luck they'll go out and start supporting you! With a little bit, with a little bit, with a little bit of blooming luck. Schools seem to have days off for all sorts of spurious reasons, but I'm sure it's mostly another skive for teachers, sod the parents who have to make extra arrangements or take UNPAID time off work for the inconvenience. As regards your daughters, just think, they'll probably eleigible to vote in the next election after this. i'm not sure your influence will realy prepare them for this, and may put a different complexion on theri attitude to supporting you in later life. In the case of this school it is because 99% of the pupils have parents who are practicing Muslims. So there is no point opening the school as nobody would turn up anyway. Interesting about the politics. They are both blatantly left wing but that is the influence from their mother. I only ever voted for Labour in my lifetime so our views are similar. They know that most of the things I say are nonsense anyway so I think they probably will be my friends which is the only aim. I have repeatedly told them that supporting parents will never be their job in life. My reference to Doolittle was humourous. They might well go and live in Morocco anyway as they have Moroccan passports in addition to the British and French.

Having seen the workload that our sons girlfriend has, I’d not begrudge teachers the odd day off. Though the extra days are usually where teachers have to attend ‘teacher training’ or some such nonsense, usually against their wishes. As for parents having to take a day off looking after their kids, well, it was their choice having them wasnt it? Schools are not there as babysitters. The unplanned days are more than the odd day off, teachers already get very good holidays which have increased significantly over the last few years. Teachers know the job they enrol into, and taking all into account are very well rewarded for it. The working days for lots of workers have changed exponentially over the years. At one time, shops used to have a 5 or 5 1/2 day week from 8:00 - 6:00 with early closing one day, and now they have to be open till 10:00 at night, granted with a shorter Sunday. Pubs had controlled licencing hours that are now continuous and much later than before. Industry often work shift patterns and those in warehouse and distribution have to match peoples 24 hour expectations.People in those occupations don't get gold plated pensions that enable early retirement plus extensive holidays.

I can only speak of what I know. My son, daughter, daughters bf all earn significantly more than the teacher. She(the teacher) works harder than all of them, has more hassle than all of them. She teaches because she loves it. Yes she has long holidays, but she works part of these. She often, maybe 3 or 4 nights a week does an hour or 2 of prep or marking. Not a job I would ever have taken.

I wasn't a 'proper' teacher as such but spent a few years teaching English as a foreign language overseas. Teaching hours were only 18-22 per week. Sounds great. Part time, right? The reality was that lesson planning and the preparation of materials accounted for a lot of time. OK, if you were experienced you could cut down on the preparation and 'wing it' to a certain extent but still, it was a lot more than 18-22 hours.
One of the girls I worked with went on to qualify as a teacher back home. She only lasted 3 years before packing it in for a job in finance. Too many demands on her time, too much pressure, insufficient resources.

Earlier on I popped over to the corner shop for some milk and while I was there I decided to buy a Mars bar. But then I changed my mind and bought a Marathon instead.

Work finished for the week. Happily they have decided that I am exempt from using the new electronic POD system due to mental incapacity and can carry on with a pen and paper based system. As I had explained to them, if they wish for me to use some type of technology, it has to be no more difficult to operate than a supermarket self-checkout. I'd also explained to them that if I wanted to use a smart phone then I would have a smart phone and not a twenty-year-old Nokia 6230i.
Charlie is up tomorrow, always a pleasure having either of the boys along.

Actually, hols decreased after I started teaching in 1979.Five days were taken from our hols & turned into Baker days(training days).I also-with many others spent at least 2 weeks out of the summer 6 weeks working in school.I got to school each day at 7.45,worked through my lunchtime 40mins( less 5mins each end for the dinner lady to collect/ return) & then spent at least 2/3 hours a day working at home with prep & marking especially detailed as I was working with year 6 Sats.*Plus 1 hr staff meetings each week & another monthly meeting on top.Yes,I have a decent pension, but I worked hard for it.I find the people who have a go at teachers seem to think that we get there at 10 to 9 & are out of the door at half past 3 !!

Wet morning.
Between showers we walked back into Watford.
The world looks a much better place after a W's breakfast.
A wander around town now and then back to boat ... we'll hold off moving until tomorrow.
Had parakeets on the bird feeders this morning ... how bizarre 🤔

Oh dear! On the K&A Interesting recovery operation. Mr Stabby how would this happen? Was the driver going too fast and suddenly realised the bridge was not rated to carry the vehicle so diverted to avoid a more serious incident?
