Our friend made Dublin harbour yesterday. Knackered after spending 3 nights hove to riding out the strong winds. He was off for fish and chips and Guinness when I spoke with him. I will stick with the inland waterways I reckon.

Pleasant enough morning here, a bit overcast but neither too hot nor too cold. Have a day at work planned which will involve lots of sitting around waiting for my trailer to be loaded/unloaded. Had a good weekend, always good when the boys visit and we enjoyed doing the Festival even if the Lancaster flypast being cancelled was a bit oof a disappointment. I think Sam at least is planning to get up mid-September.

Lovely morning. Off to collect the Taskmaster launch.
I am usually a good for nothing layabout but I really like these launches. A lot. So I might surprise myself by restoring it...

I am guessing thr Taskmaster was a hull only version. Explains the plywood topsides.

One for our Ruby fans perhaps (all 2 of them)… we had a visitor to the gliding club on Sunday, one Stuart McInally who, it transpired afterwards, was a Scottish international rugby player recently retired. He wondered if he could have a flight but weather wasn’t suitable and anyway I think he would have been too big to fit in a glider. Apparently he is undergoing training to be a professional pilot. Is he some sort of rugby hero, or just an also-ran?

An Edinburgh player who I think had around 50 caps for Scotland, so not too shabby.
I think as with many, injury finished his career in his early thirties.

Several fit rowers moved it from land to water for me Unfortunately the bow bulkhead had been breached from rainwater being in it so I had to chop a small hole in the deck for the bilge pump. This is OK because I like to be able to step on there anyway so I will cover the hole with some lengthways hardwood pieces supported from below to make a step capable of holding my weight. Bow down a lot. They carrid some water ! And amazingly the Honda BF8 electric start outboard turns over and the sump is full of oil not water. So that might actually work !! This is a test for me. Do I sit around drinking beer or do I restore a lovely little launch. I may try the latter. A real bonus if the Honda will work. Its a great motor and being s rowing club they don't put a lot of hours on them. Could be a gem.

The wooden decks are better than I expected. No hole in the front hull section so once it has dried I will stick a round piece of thick black tread foam over the hole I made for the bilge pump with sikaflex. Feeling quite positive about this little launch. Its in better condition than I was expecting. There are 5 separate watertight compartments. The stern compartment before the transom has two holes where the GRP has been pushed in when it was on s trolley and filled with rainwater. It doesn't sink but wants sorting By bolting wooden boards to the bottom. Its flat chine not curved. Easy job with sikaflex and this is also the place to mount the pod drive. Hull has been painted which is Good and Bad. Bad as gelcoat is better but good as I can paint it my own colour. I think black and varnished wood will look nice. Tricky to lift it but I will find a way one day. If this all goes to plan I end up with a hybrid drive black hull launch with varnished topsides. When running on the (fixed) pod drive the Honda outboard will work for steering. Not for manoovering but for normal navigation. Could be cool to have a stealth mode.

restore /rĭ-stôr′/ transitive verb To bring back into existence or use; reestablish. restore law and order. To bring back to an original or normal condition. restore a building; restored the patient to health.
The 2nd one.

Outboard might need a rudder plate to give you effective steering. I bought 1.5 honda 10s years back, pull start, worked a treat, got more than I paid when I sold them. A 10 just wasn't big enough for the NB, shoved ok but no stopping power
