Been raining on and off all day today, I feel like I've been robbed of half my weekend. Equinox today so we are in both meteorological and astonomical Autumn now. Hasn't been a Summer to write home (to Kent) about really. Doesn't look like I'm working tomorrow as Slam Transport still haven't sent any instructions through. Maybe they will call at 08:15 to say "Where the Hell are you???" or maybe it's just quiet. Work does tend to slacken off towards the end of the month as companies try to defer deliveries until the next calendar month, which givees them 30 days more credit. Sam the Rentboy tells me he's planning to visit next weekend, which is good. Hopefully the weather will be kind enough to go out cruising on the uninsured boat, but if not there's a service due, a new ignition switch to fit, new leisure batteries to fit, all things I can do myself but a lot easier with helping hands. Didn't you fit new batteries (and an adapted box) just last year? I'm thinking of replacing mine before winter hits but you got me wondering how far Sam the Rentboy is prepared to travel to assist with the lifting, how much he might charge and which ones to avoid if yours need replacing already

Every website I've ever looked at says that Lead Acid batteries last approximately 300 cycles, which is 10 months. I'd go for Lithium but a proper set-up is expensive, just the alternator required is £500+.

I'm thinking of replacing mine before winter hits but you got me wondering how far Sam the Rentboy is prepared to travel to assist with the lifting, how much he might charge and which ones to avoid if yours need replacing already I did, I need to replace them every year. Every website I've ever looked at says that Lead Acid batteries last approximately 300 cycles, which is 10 months. I'd go for Lithium but a proper set-up is expensive, just the alternator required is £500+. Or you could build your own for about £50 like I did. Plus £1500 for 600Ah usable capacity which would see you out. Or you could go for Trojan T105 lead acid batteries which have a cycle life of around 1200 at 50% DoD - and most of the time you won’t be going near 50% DoD. More expensive than cheapo LA but long term much cheaper. Ours lasted 7 years and still had plenty of capacity left when I switched to Li, which is of course in a completely different league. Ok 7 years of leisure use but we were on the boat over 100 days a year, and no solar.
