Mr Stabby ... just for you ... you must be chuffed to bits. They're going to love you on the Battlefield Line ... lives on a boat ... rides a restored moped ... and a miserable sod too Rog Not seen the trains running as yet across the battlefield. Just to add to the Indian takeaway at Stoke golding, the cafe open at Ashby boats and pizza takeaway at Shackerstone pub. The George and Dragon at Stoke golding is serving takeaway food and beer. Itβs owned by our local Church end brewery and is very good. Best to ring prior to visiting.

My son in law born in this corner of Wales and has lived here all his life..he is Welsh to his core.. I do not have that sense of belonging anywhere or having roots...I did spend childhood years up until 18 in Oundle, Northants but I do not have an affinity to that area..perhaps as my school was in Kettering and I did not have many friends.. Dunno, but I think a sense of belonging is tied up in a community....we did not live where there was a community spirit.

I found that after I had been at sea for several years, I felt a stranger in the town I was brought up in. To be honest, the way the town has changed since I was a child, I would not wish to be associated..
The town I was brought up in was a quiet country town, it had lost it's market and had become a bit suburban but was still a bit old world, It became a New Town for people being moved out of the East End and everything changed, the look, the type of people, the way of life and the accent.

I think it's more difficult for English people to feel a sense of belonging than many other nationals. The British and especially the English are often reminded of their prominent position in running the slave trade and the injustices of the empire. These things happened a long time ago but it seems difficult to shake them off. The national flag is today seen as a symbol of injustice. Other nationals that suffer in a similar way are Germany and Japan. It seems a little unfair for people to be judged on the actions of those that lived many generations before them, but there you go.

I had a GF from Oundle 35-40 years ago, I wonder if you went to school with her, she was a bit odd so you'd remember I think. I'll PM you.

Came up the Grindley Brook locks this morning ... no staff on duty.
The staircase was a sod ... gates leaking at both ends meant that water had to be sent down whilst locking up to be able to make levels.
Still there's no hire crews about ... should only be experienced boaters who ought to be able to see what's happening and cope.
Shopped at Whitchurch and now moored in a solitary spot listening to incredible bird song, and occasional light aircraft ... must be an airfield not too far away.

I remember a long time ago probably about 20 years I went through Nuneaton on my boat and there was a massive hole in the ground by the canal. It was enormous. Not sure what it was or where exactly but never seen anything like it since. It must have been a mine of some sort. I could see it from the boat but it was obviously quite a long way from the canal itself. There are three to choose from, old quarryβs now filled with water, judkins quarry, geeβs quarry and another which doesnβt have a name, all three can be reached easily from the canal but the only one you wouldβve able see would be the one with no name..

We are off to the Russian border in a minute. Road 866. Asphalt surface all the way. About an hour from Kuusamo. Just looking at scenery and hoping to get some pics for another YouTube video I have in mind. Daylight all night here. 2351 sunset, sunrise 0211.

Filming this now - 30mins timelapse. Still an hour to drive on and film it going below the horizon. 2 cars passed us in 42km, none so far on way back from the border barrier. Dead quiet, not a sound apart from a cuckoo, some swans and bells on reindeers.
