Stabby does make a valid point re. cars... for most of my life until savings got REALLY serious to get the boat, I "accepted" from my monthly salary I'd be paying circa 300 quid a month to have a decent car... quite often on a lease more latterly... which was money thrown away. OK so I convinced myself I NEEDED to know when I got in my car it would start so I wouldn't be late for work (either in the office or a clients) - (this before fairground land)... the reality was, that those buffoons I worked with would often have car problems (admittedly they were pooofs with very little common sense) and being "late" was just tolerated by the boss ergo, I was the idiot. WHEN I realized an old banger off ebay would make me just as mobile (most of the time) as I was before but for less than a tenth of my previous annual running costs it was like an epiphany. It speeded up the boat fund enough to put a deposit down on a house at the same time. Stabby worked this out before me. ONCE I stopped caring about public opinion of the IT guy turning up in an 18 year old whatever, it was brilliant. BTW - it's COLD , WET and MISERABLE in Manchester again this morning... Need to go for a pump out later (well I Don't but I'm a week off and it's easier than lugging around the trim weights to balance us off again). I've been through a few different phases in terms of what age of cars I preferred to buy, but for the last 18 years or so they've been lease cars (with a new one every 3 years)- which means I've not had to do much more than top up the windscreen wash water- and what little maintenance skills I might have had are now long forgotten. That ends with the current lease - either in March or maybe June (if they agree to extend it until I finally leave work). I think if I bought a car again it would be a older used one, as you've described. You do tend to have the odd breakdown, but if you get good cover that shouldn't be a major worry. I have in the past had a couple of super-cheap brand new cars like the Fiat Uno- that one was paid for in 3 years, and then ran almost fault free for another 7 years at a very low annual cost- but I don't know if such cheap cars are still available these days. Because I'm ccing, and keeping the car parked fairly safely is frankly a bit of a pain, I think the future for me lies in renting a car when I need one. Have to admit though, if I ever moved onto a permanent mooring (which is a long way off yet), I'd probably get a car in no time for the convenience, and probably a 125 bike as well, for sunny days or when the traffic is bad.

Fine day this morning as I left the SW, all good until I crossed the M1 and got on the A14. Temperature dropped like a stone with rain and sleet and to cap it all the river went on to SSA at the same time. Still, heating was on when I arrived (I sent it a txt as I left) so boat was nicely warmed. Stove now on so nicely toasty. I feel that an electric blanket might arrive soon, purely to air the bed you understand

Friend of mine bought one of those cheap Chinese air blowers for his container (storage not a living unit) fired it up last night while I was there and it started chucking out heat post haste. Pretty good for £76!! And I was like "Neverspacher eat yer heart out" www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-2KW-5KW-Diesel-Air-Heater-Remote-Control-LCD-Display-For-Truck-Van-Motorhome-/233789542403?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292It looked a bit awkward to wire it to a gsm switch unit but I reckon I can find a way. Will be ordering one of these for the anchor locker on Dulcinea. Like everything else on the boat it's a well designed locker which you stand inside when deploying the anchor and includes a sealed (with custom clamping gear) exit door from the sleeping cabin. Space for one of these units in there without causing any obstruction. And a 20 litre carrier for the diesel. And a hole beside the door for the air. Or just leave the door open. Nice.

I'm like "Buy it all before end of December" isn't it. I'm sweating now on my Christmas delivery from 'Belgium in a Box'. If it's late, will there be duty to pay???

Suspect it will be easy to do a GSM switch. It looks like there are 4 wires going to the LCD switch display, One will be +v, one -v, one will be the switch with the forth possiblty being data for the display. All you need is a SPCO relay to interupt the switch line and feed it with power from the display. Finding which wire is which is up to you remember its not always red and black as supply on heaters. Ebers are Red+v Brown-v Yellow switch Have fun

I feel that Foxy contributes handsomely to this forum. Always a pleasure to read what he has to say. Another one who appreciates my efforts!

Slowly getting there with the wet room, our work was interrupted by having to go off and collect my newly MOT'd car this afternoon, we need to make up some framework to support the basin against the gunwale, we have one more piece of cladding to install behind the towel rail and we may have to do some modifications to get the tap assembly to fit the basin, for now we have just bodged it all back together with cable ties so we have running water. We have to buy some wooden trim from Wickes tomorrow, also do the silicone beading but we're pleased with it so far and it's only cost about £100 all in.

Only these things are not cheap in the long run, with China splurging their Covid-19 bio-weapon upon the world once they got enough cash to develop it from everyone who 'bought cheap'. Same with Lidl and Aldi - buy cheap 'Product of EU' goods in those stores and soon we'll have Stukas in the skies again. I'm no historian, or indeed an expert on political affairs- but I am going to stick my neck out and suggest that buying cheap EU goods in an Aldi store will probably not result in stukas bombing England (or anyone else) again. Just a wild guess. PS- you really should try the bakery section. Its far better than you would expect, especially given how much profit they clearly have to divert to producing buzz bombs in readiness to attack London. Tally ho, old bean- last one to the checkout is a silly sausage.

"I'm sweating now on my Christmas delivery from 'Belgium in a Box'. If it's late, will there be duty to pay???"If there is no trade deal with the EU (and it is now too late to form a comprehensive deal), and if your EU import is delayed past midnight on 31 Dec, it will theoretically become subject to the same checks (and probably higher tariffs) as goods being imported from the US or Russia. That said, apparently Boris has agreed to abandon all tariff charges and most of the checks on vehicles and goods imported from the EU until next summer, in order to avoid chaos at the border (because our expanded EU customs processing systems and physical facilities are not yet working, and are very unlikely to be fully functional on 1 Jan). So the EU lorries (whatever they might contain) will continue to be waved through with almost no checks- which is great news for your Belgian box. However, China and The US have already lodged concerns with the UK government that their goods imported to the UK will be paying tariffs whilst EU goods will not, and ultimately there will be consequences for that unfairness of treatment.

And why can't we have a plebiscite about the death penalty?
Are the people in general too plebby to decide important things?
Only reason for Brexit plebiscite was to cement the Tories in power and give Cameron his much wanted second term.
And bury Labour.
Nothing to do with letting the plebs decide what to do because the plebs are plebs and should not be allowed to make important decisions.

Seven hundred pages of miscellany and general rambling ... who'd have thought !
A grey, still, dry morning, beginning to make daylight now.
Not been as manic on the retail park as everyone expected ... the fear now is that the bulk of shopping's been done online already, and the tills won't get the christmas buzz as much as expected, or more importantly, as much as needed.
A lot of retail 'giants' are in trouble along with Debenhams and the Arcadia Group ... the simple fact is that many more will fold unless sales pick up over christmas.
Hi ho, hi ho it's ...

Despite the likelihood that the death penalty would be overwhelmingly popular here on TB, any vote would be soundly defeated. Probably. Its about the middle classes and crims.
