Doesn’t quite cut it, a Skoda as a getaway car. It’s all part of the “Q-car” disguise, skoda badge but 280bhp/155mph/0-60 in 5.4 seconds hidden under the bonnet Plus a heated rear windscreen to keep your hands warm when you have to push it to get it started. What's the difference between a Skoda and a Tampax?

Had the guided tour of the rarely viewed sheds at Charity Dock today. Fascinating stuff. Pete asked me if I would be ok with staying in the dry dock until Wednesday when the next boat is due in. It makes more sense to operate the dry dock on a "one-in, one-out" basis as every time the dock is flooded it drags a lot of mud in which has to then be removed as it slows the boat drying after it has been pressure washed. I said that's fine, the longer the blacking has to cure the better plus there are all sorts of other jobs I'm sure he won't mind doing, and I want the alternator replacing before I set off too. A few pics. Everything bar the Ariel 3 is collectible, desirable and potentially valuable. You are a lucky chap - a nose round there must be fascinating 🍻

I know it is horrible to think about but the sun setting over the river in Staines is quite beautiful. You heard it here first (and last probably!) Did you ever tell us why you needed a shedload of money? Is it rude to ask? To pay off the 'Staines Massive' I believe.

Says he, the owner of one of the worst heaps of shit ever dreamt up (in a nightmare). Skoda- possibly the most unfortunate car manufacturer ever - at one time made some really nice quality vehicles for those who could afford it. This is the original Skoda Superb: Not long after this rolled off the assembly line the jerries turned up and insisted that production changed to tanks. The Skoda works then made some of the best tanks produced in the war. Albeit a German design, this naughty device popularly referred to as a 'Hetzer' was very successful: Sadly the company was then forced to make the nasty shitheaps which destroyed the reputation (or made it depending on your point of view) and ironically things didn't get better till the return of the krauts. I've never owned a Skoda but driven several examples of the German design, and I liked them a lot. The Octavia corners unbelievably well. However the things that were best about the new cars - low cost and a simplicity that assisted the incredible reliability - has sadly been lost amidst the addition of more and more techno-garbage, to say nothing of the escalating prices. But hey, that's progress for you.

Lane keeping, adaptive (radar controlled) cruise control and blind spot monitoring makes the 425 mile journey down to the boat really relaxing. My dad’s 1939 Rolls Wraith couldn’t do any of that! But you do need a computer. The xenon steerable headlights are currently pointing at the ground with orange dash warning caption, laptop says one of the suspension level sensors kaput, £50 from eBay so not bad but I’m sure if I took it to a dealer it would cost a fortune to diagnose and fix!

I think this post puts it's finger on the problem I have with virtually all modern vehicles ...... they are too bloody complex. They are full of wonderful devices, but if they go wrong they stop the car for something daft and require huge amounts of dosh for some weird and wonderful part. This can either leave you at the side of the road or limping along at some ridiculously low speed trying to get home.
In a basic vehicle, with just the contents of the average tool box, some bailer twine and sticky tape, running repairs can be made that will usually get you home. (as example, on a V4 Ford engine I converted a rubber bonnet stop into a temporary guide in the rocker box to replace a broken casting, that lasted from Cornwall to Essex )

Not too late to throw the 'vaccine hesitant' onto the bonfire! Poor Clinton Cool , even you are getting at him now. You could hold hands as you leap onto the pyre. Unlike Naughtyfox, I'm not offended by the term 'vaccine hesitant' It's not accurate, my choice has nothing to do with hesitancy. Unlike 'antivaxxer' though the term stops short of being offensive due to the firm and established negative connotations of the term. If you don't understand that just consider why 'Paki' is generally held to be offensive whereas 'Aussie' isn't. Broadstream media/ the left accept there may be justifiable reasons for 'vaccine hesitancy'. It's not perfect in their book, everyone should submit to the needle they say, but at least they have now stopped short of describing everyone who chooses not to have the jab, for multiple reasons, as being sub normal human beings with morality that's inferior to that of those who submit.

Our kid had to ditch a Peugot that became stuck in 'get home mode' for some unaccountable reason. Eventually his garage advised three options, there being two computer chips involved A. Change the cheapest of the chips (circa £1,000) in the knowledge that it may not fix it ... in which case he'd have to ... B. Change the second chip (circa £2,500) which should fix it C. Get rid ! He opted for C. as the car wasn't worth more than £4000 ... his annoyance was that the engine was fine, but useless without the computer management stuff. Modern cars are fantastic ... whilst they're working Rog PS the figures are from memory and not intended to be accurate
