I've been casually looking for a tug deck boat for a while. Mostly because I want to be able to carry a bigger motorbike but also because I just like them.
Chatting to a bloke today who is selling his. It's a 55ft 1999 Stowe Hill butty conversion. Engine is a Perkins 4108 and there's a working spare. The boat is lower at the back where there used to be a boatman's cabin but it's now the kitchen. The tiller is one of those huge wooden ones that hang off the back. Inside it's quirky, not completely finished but definitely liveable.
He tells me he wants under 30K for it. I'm no expert but it seems a very low price. Anyone have an opinion as to the approx. value of this boat, from my description?

It hasn't been that long since Junior sold his boat, which I recall was a tug deck style. A quick search on the other channel should show you what his boat sold for, as a means of comparison, and it was a pretty nice boat.

More than likely less than he wants! I would insult him and hope to get lucky thats how I bought this boat so cheap

I imagine it was converted in1999 but the butty is how old? Have you got any photos? As Peter says if you like it make a silly offer.

I'm not an expert by any means but that doesn't sound far off of the mark to me? I'd imagine there would be a fairly limited customer base for what is an unusual boat. Anyway, if it doesn't work out, I know a nice 50' Stenson cruiser stern for sale at the moment for a bargain price, cash only.

Also with 2 Perkins 4108's in working order, decent engines and spares still readily available.
Worth a look at

It sounds like it has retained its butty stern rather than having a motor back end put on it. Not a concern of itself but you might want to examine the running gear and prop arrangement thoroughly, and take it for a run to see how it handles.

So ricco did you put an offer in for the boat? Did you end up owning it ? Or did you run a mile?

I spoke to someone who's been around boats for most of his life. He suggested that because it's non standard it would be a difficult thing to sell. Also, although Perkins engines are half decent they aren't desirable like some other makes. It's unlikely to handle well because of the running gear arrangement. It's a pity really because I fancy it, it's within my price bracket as well but for now I think I'll pass on it.
