I'm going to do the Limehouse-Teddington thing in early-mid September, I think I'm all prepared for it, but it would be good to go in convoy with at least one other boat so I wondered if anybody else wanted to come along?
I'd almost certainly be doing it either on a Saturday or Sunday so I could get a crew along. Post here if this sounds like something you might want to do with us.

Can't be me, but I can't help but imagine how much of a laugh that would be!

In two years I have covered about a thousand miles of canal but I think going up the Thames will probably be the high point of running my boat, however long I own it for. It would be good to meet up with somebody and do it in convoy though so fingers crossed!

No, I don't have VHF... ideally I'd like to but I won't have time to do the course, I believe at 42' I don't need it, although if you wanted to come along for the day you'd be welcome, I can probably borrow a radio.

The London boaters Facebook group is probably the best place to find another boat for the trip.

Good idea Kris, I'll have an ask on there nearer the time, I would prefer to do it in convoy with at least one other boat. That might well make you feel more comfortable about the trip. Just bear in mind though, if you suffer an engine failure down the tideway, even in company with another boat, the first thing to do is to throw out your anchor, which was neatly laid out in your cratch area, and stop your boat careering into a bridge pillar at 3mph out of control. You'd end up with a tow from PLA eventually, because someone would radio your predicament to them - especially if you're jumping up and down waving your arms about! Your accompanying boat can then attempt to throw a towline - but I'd prefer the experts to do that, personally. I believe there's little anyone can do for another narrowboat in a busy tideway. It's better to research it and then boldly go etc! I can dig out lots of links and advice which Mrs Loafer and I studied before we went down alone, if you wish. Our dog managed the navigation! Since you're going UPSTREAM, it is all a whole lot less of a drama than going downstream. The notorious turn at Limehouse is no issue, going out. We've done it twice now, and it was great fun both times. We picked a period during neap tides and it is very easy, providing your boat is prepared. Hope it works out - there's something rather grand about driving your narrowboat under Tower Bridge. The above is just my opinions. If you don't like them, I do have others!

Wot e said Iconoclast, no problem, didnt know you were under the limit. Check PLA Notices to Mariners pla.co.uk/Safety/Notices-to-Mariners-RSS for any info on navigation restrictions such as which bridge arches are closed etc as you get closer to planning your trip. Enjoy
