Beautiful on the river. Left Newark this morning looking to find a mooring to bbq at. Daughter has joined us for the weekend 😀

Based on our experiences yesterday:
Hazelford lock, plenty of room below, and some room above, with lots of grassy picnic areas. Very pleasant. You do have a fairly high wall to get up to though.
Gunthorpe lock - absolutely rammed to the gunnels with cruisers, no room, and no nice grassy areas. Probably because there are a couple of pubs adjacent.
Stoke lock (where we spent last night) very tranquil. Limited space on the pontoon (round the corner on the right after exiting lock) but loads of wall-side moorings, all above the lock. Very tranquil, we had a lovely night there last night. Space to have a BBQ I’m sure.
Oh and there is a small pontoon at Fiskerton but it was full and didn’t look the sort of place to have a BBQ.

We moored overnight below Hazelford lock. Walked back to the pub late afternoon at Fiskerton before having a bbq by the boat. Very busy along this stretch, but it is bank holiday weekend and we are near several marinas. Spoke with a chap off a 40’ cruised who only uses it on bank holiday weekends, hadn’t been on it since Easter. Must have cost 200k minimum. Said he would love to boat more but needs to work long hours, to keep up the repayments on the boat and his house. I think he is missing a trick, each to their own I guess.

A bit hot for us Northerners but we survived under layers of sun cream and my parasol! Preferred the morning when it was cooler but sunny. Nottingham (Beeston) cut rammed full of little cruisers with very drunk people on board, but nobody crashed into us (quite). Highlight of the day was meeting kris, who wasn’t the angry yoof I had envisaged, but in fact a perfectly normal and pleasant chap. The wonders of the internet! Went past Tony I think, but I didn’t actually spot his boat (I may have been inside hiding from the sun).

Haha that wasn’t actually me, I paid some random towpath stranger to impersonate me whilst I was inside oiling my two heads. Yes, stopped just above the lock as you’d suggested. Neighbours a bit rowdy partying on the other side, and cruiser 2 boats in front were having a very loud domestic, but once all that died down it was very peaceful. Had cold beers on the yacht club benches watching a flotilla of 7 cruisers pass through the lock (after volockies had gone home) but had to supply our own cold lager as it was only 18:30 and place doesn’t open until 19:30. Very pleasant!

Very pleasant! It is the best spot around here the clubs very friendly and so are the moorers opposite. I'll be back up that way tmw.
