One thing that really winds me up about summer in the UK is the lack of nice places to swim, especially if you live far from the coast. Near to me all lakes/reservoirs/rivers that seem suitable for swimming have huge angry signs saying that it's prohibited. Last summer when we had a few really hot days I was very tempted to just jump in the canal for a dip myself. When there is nowhere decent for them to go kids are going to start jumping in unsuitable places like canals.

I used to jump off of high places all the time when I was young - teens and early 20's. The one thing you always did before jumping, though, was to make sure the water was plenty deep enough to absorb your fall, with no hidden obstructions, also that there was somewhere nearby that was easy to climb out of the water. As I recall one learned that it was best to do it wearing sneakers because the impact would really sting the soles of your feet.

Me too, but most British people don't seem to be raised to swim in natural environments, only swimming pools, so they don't seem to get taught how to do it safely. This is why whenever there is a heat wave in the UK there are dumb fucks drowning left right and centre.

Great place for swimming on the Thames is Runnymede. Heading upstream on the bend just after the Pleasure ground. Had a few dips there in the evening then a barbi to finish off the day.
Canal wise, Rochdale summit level at littleborough, but that was in the days before it was restored, and also Hollingworth Lake. Also had a few dips in the Peak Forest canal late at night usually following a barbi in a bridge hole.
I also was forced to plunge into the Oxford at Aynho once, but that was my forfeit for losing at a drinking game

I had a word with this kid on numerous occasions about swimming in the canal, he spoke good english but didnt believe me that it wasnt safe. He unfortunately paid with his life, we have no signs up saying no swimming so no doubt the family will be looking to sue CRT for his death along with some shark of a lawyer to help them
