From a stoppage notice received today:
”Please be advised that the navigation has been closed due to potential loss of water. The locks will be re-opened at 8:30am on Friday 18 October.”
A potential loss. That means one that might happen, but hasn’t happened yet. Might as well close down the whole system then!

That is part of their plan. Well close it down to boats navigating. But to stop it causing outrage, they plan to do it in stages. They just meed a few large scale clamities first.

Sounds to me like a vandalism issue.
Scrotes playing with the paddles. Maybe a magnet person left a lock key out for them. I always threw windlasses back in if I didn't want them but the new breed of idiot magnet people leave shit everywhere.
That would explain the "potential" side of it. Nobody knows if the lowlife are coming back but it's worth chaining up just in case they do.

Surely every lock represents a possible loss of water? Should they all be chained up?

Where is this precautionary stoppage ? Marsworth. I applaud the Trust for it's vigilance and sense of responsibility, . . after all we're having one of the driest spells of weather on record, and there aren't any reservoirs to draw extra water supplies from for hundreds of miles in any direction !

Thanks for the update, Nick. I'd say it was a joke, but it's just not funny any more.
I haven't received any stoppage notices for the last couple of months. I have asked the CRT Customer Support Team why they've suddenly stopped. I tried doing this through a "live chat" - that worked well - they asked me to send an email! I received a reply to the same email address informing me that the problem was that my email server must be experiencing a problem as they are being sent but I'm not opening them.
Damian's drivel arrives regularly every fortnight to the same email address and I seriously suspect the email reminding me my licence is due for renewal will get through very shortly.
No techie, me but - HELP!!

This sort of thing has started happening ever since CRT fucked up with Toddbrook. Since that incident, which was wholly due to their incompetence as regards maintenance, they have started taking an ultra cautious approach. Here at Bollington, where the canal has been leaking for at least 5 years, they decided to put stop planks in a full 10 days before works were due to start. They arranged 'assisted passage' for a few hours yesterday.
Expect the number of stoppages to go through the roof.

Silly me - but I'm really not quite that stupid - or obvious (unlike the new sock puppet which many of those I thought were my "mates" seem to lurve!). Seriously, though - thank you for bothering, Martin. It's obviously a CRT tech problem - already passed to their "webteam" apparently! Thank you met x
