You know, him what does CRT’s “Boater’s Update:
“When the situation is urgent, but not an emergency - please call our 24-hour emergency contact number 0800 47 999 47.”
So when it is not an emergency, you should call the emergency contact number. I am confused. Is it an emergency, or not?

We were told to call the emergency number last Xmas when that traffic cone-thingy was preventing the lock gate from closing at the staircase on the Staffs & Worcs. I said are you sure? And they said yes. And the chaps who turned up said yes that's the number.
It does seem bizarre.

Emergency has always meant to me 'threat to life or limb' - urgent just means 'FFS get your act together pronto'. Advice seems ok to me, I doubt I'd even think of calling CRT in an emergency. Calling the number an Emergency number is nothing worse than the AA marketing themselves as the 4th emergency service.

I was going to start a thread myself, being wound up beyond belief by most of this week's wisdom from the Demonic one - particularly as they still won't use the same email address to send me stoppage notices yet send me that drivel. Phoned the "emergency" number a couple of months ago when a very big tree gave a gunshot type "crack" and crashed into and across the whole canal, missing a boat by feet and blocking navigation for a day and a bit. Called the "emergency" number as this happened around 6.30am but it went unanswered for at least an hour - I hung up and re-tried numerous times - when I finally got through to a voice I was put on hold until the dead tone kicked in yet again ........ good job it wasn't a REAL emergency. Eventually reported via the 0300 number - canal and bridge numbers either end recorded by CRT (!?). However, when I tried to find out what was happening a couple of hours later was told something had been reported but they weren't sure what canal it was on..........................

How many years has he been out here??
….. where on earth did he dig up this "pearl of wisdom"?
To summarise, the scenario was that a single-handed, female, boater is arriving at a visitor mooring that has limited space but another boater is stood on the towpath and indicates to the arriving boater that the remaining empty space is reserved for a couple of boats that will be arriving soon (of which he is part of the crew).
Perhaps I should invoke the incensed REAL boater - or maybe sexual/lonely/sad discrimination - tag?
Making life bitter by water?
Happy boating!

Calling the number an Emergency number is nothing worse than the AA marketing themselves as the 4th emergency service. I remember reading years ago that the RNLI, who had already considered themselves as the 4th emergency service after Fire, Police, and Ambulance, were very miffed at the AA ‘usurpation’ of the title. Details are vague at this remove, but a story went that an amphibious car had run into trouble during a cross-channel attempt, and called for help. The RNLI promptly contacted the AA and told them “We think this is one of your customers, go do your thing”.
