He played Van Gogh in a biopic, which was unusual casting but an excellent performance (Lust for life). The Vikings was a terrific film too. A true Hollywood legend in the mould of James Stewart, John Wayne and Gregory Peck. Can't expect some obscure Fin to 'get it' when he's totally absorbed in the red top rubbish papers Rog

I agree John, and because he has died so very young........not!! we will get to see a lot of those great films over the next few months, i for one am looking forward to that pleasure I do like his son Michael though, has acted well in some movies, although the one we half-watched on Tuesday evening where he looks after his granddaughter with Diane Keaton was decidedly lacklustre. Also they nicked an idea from the Bridget Jones' Diary movie - I'll find both to show you when I get home and can use the grown-ups' computer. Compare and contrast: Bridget Jones's Diary (movie) 2001: "I like you very much." "Ah. Apart from the smoking and the drinking... and the vulgar mother and the verbal diarrhea." And So It Goes (movie) 2014: "You're a very attractive woman." "Besides my song selection, my patter and my physical appearance." Talk about plagiarism!!

RIP Caroline Flack, found dead at home in her flat on Friday the 14th Phil It seems that she took her own life, having been hounded by the gutter press and social media for the last few months. I didn't know much about her but no-one deserves the abuse she suffered, and to be made to feel that suicide is the only way to end the abuse. I wish I could say this would be a turning point against the way the press reports things but unfortunately nothing will change.

40 is too young for killing yourself.
Fully agree about the horrible newspaper things but for some unfathomable reason there are people who actually pay to read this sort of thing. It's not just the people who go out and seek the stories and invade people's lives it's the ordinary man in the ordinary house who pays the big media tycoon for a piece of paper.
What a bizarre world.

Can't say I've ever heard of her so looked her up, funny how her death got to Wikipedia so quickly. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Flack "Love Island presenter Caroline Flack has been arrested and charged with assault by beating. In the early hours of Thursday 12 December, police were called to the 40-year-old TV personality's house in Islington, North London, which she is believed to share with her boyfriend, Lewis Burton, 27. The Metropolitan police confirmed Flack's arrest in a statement that read: "Caroline Flack, 40, of Islington was charged on Friday, 13 December with assault by beating." Oh dear.

I find it very sad that she took her own life rather than face up to the consequences of whatever did happen-especially as the boyfriend(victim)was very supportive of her.She surely must have had demons before this.I cannot imagine ever feeling like that.

I would suspect it was media both social and mainstream that caused her death. Not the consequences of what she had or had not done.

There are some theories about suicide being a genetic thing.
My older sister looked into it after our mother hanged herself a few years ago. I mean she investigated the genetic theory not that she was wandering about on railway lines.
Bearing in mind that she (my mum) had three siblings who had previously killed themselves in different ways including the 12 bore eating thing and one of her surviving siblings daughter hanged herself aged 50 it does seem quite a convincing argument for some sort of genetic thing.
Or just really nasty embedded trauma.
Who knows.

There are some theories about suicide being a genetic thing. Loads of things are genetic. My ex is dying from cancer and it's entirely because she's a miserable fucker. "In antiquity, physicians related depression or melancholic humour to cancer's pathogenesis. Galen (130-201 AD), sustained that melancholy could give rise to a tumour and his theory was repeated by the Byzantine and Arab physicians. In the 19th century, malignancy and depression became synonymous and people attributed their cancer to sadness. In 1893, the London surgeon Hebert Snow (1847-1930), performed an epidemiological study in order to clarify that link. The results revealed a probable connection. His work was followed by several large scale prospective studies some of which identified depression as a risk factor for cancer where others found no association. However, a possible explanation could be given by our current knowledge in immunology: inflammation and nonspecific immune activation play a role in the pathophysiology of depression and cancer growth." I feel sorry for her but maybe she has brought it upon herself, or maybe research is wrong and is suggesting that the tail is wagging the dog whereas in reality cancer starts in the personality and spreads from there?

I think cancer, which has never been present in anyone in my family, could well be related to things like stress and environment. Maybe it's genetic as well I don't know.
The other thing with the suicide arrangement is that once one person does it this could be a green light situation.
Green as in traffic not boats.
The first one in my mum's family was quite young in his 20s. He cleverly worked out he did not want to continue living so jumped off a high building in Kew gardens where he worked. This failed due to an impact with a pedestrisn so he did the 12 bore thing a bit later on which had the desired effect.
You could argue that once he had done this and validated the solution others would follow. And they did.
