My little trawler has already got a couple of Derrick cranes for getting the dinghy in and out but it's tempting to get Davits as they allow faster deployment when the crane arch is folded down. I've not had davits on a boat before. Are they a nuisance? Wondering about rear visibility and also potential for fouling when doing locks. I could not help noticing these on eBay and being rather tempted by them. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cast-alloy-boat-davits-with-bronze-fittings-/202878294421They look rather better than most I have seen. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cast-alloy-boat-davits-with-bronze-fittings-/202878294421Interesting bit of trivia is that the word "davit" is pronounced the same as the name "David". Not a lot of people know that. I still pronounce it the other way.

Depends how long your little boat is - longer than the boat is wide?

No that's ok I've got two dinks to choose from 6ft6 or 8ft6. The mother ship is 10ft wide at the stern.

It would look good. Does that come into it? Never mind the dinghy for a minute, it could cause serious damage to the mother ship if you reversed into something?

Yes good point.
I think it would be worth mounting it onto plates with some sort of arrangement where it would break off before damaging the mother ship.
Having said that the attachment point is a steel member which is not structural to the boat and has no deck associated with it so it would not be end of world.
The fact it would look good is quite a big factor. I'd like to carry the larger dinghy but I do not want to tow it behind as that looks a bit too gippo.
