Like many of us I suppose, I use CanalPlan AC to plan journeys, and enormously appreciate it. I realised that a lot of hard work went into the site but I never realised quite how much until I went into the bowels of the forum and found this... canalplan.org.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.cgi?pageid=changes?pageid=changesIt's incredible that folk give so much of their time to do this, so I'm here to say "Thanks".

Strangely it is not something I have ever used, I always spend days poring over maps and guide books planning (to be honest I enjoy doing that ) and my voyages of discovery are liable to change in both direction and speed on the spur of the moment. (I fortunately nowadays do not have to keep any sort of schedule)
During my last "expedition" I used Imray's The river Great Ouse and tributaries, guide backed up by the 4 OS Explorer 2.5" to the mile maps that cover the whole system. It's maybe an expensive way of doing it but I find it thoroughly enjoyable.

I had a problem trying to use it last year, within a couple of hours of reporting the bug it had been fixed. Certainly a more deserving recipient of a donation than Dan's effort.

Totally agree and I join your "Thanks". It allows quick easy investigation of routes and alternatives. It even allows tweaking to alter stops etc. Lovely piece of software. It has made planning trips a lot easier over the years. Johnv part of your enjoyment is the planning so you should not use it. Long may your enjoyment continue

Yes, Canal Planner is great! It helps you to get an idea of how long it will take from A to B and the obstructions in your way (locks & lift bridges, etc.). We double the time, just to be on the safe side!

Its something i've never used. My canal trips have always been planned using the Nicholsons with a start and a finish point. Stops along the way have always been....."wait and see how far we get"
On the Lumpy stuff timing was a bit more important so my Passage Plan was always done on the charts and tide flow tables and then Waypoints added to the chart plotter.

It's very useful for plotting where you could receive visitors, who need a car park nearby, three weeks away.

Yeah, the founder meant it to be 'Car Park Planner' but typed 'Canal' by mistake and thought, "Well, not fucking changing it now".

Yeah I've used it for a few years. I can get a phone call requesting a quote to deliver a boat, and get back to them in minutes having looked on my phone
