Actually looks like the sort of hook used for pulling down shop blinds , a true boat hook has a straight end with a ball on it and a more pronounced hook on the side . Phil That's true yes but they are not usually stainless steel.

I suppose this is what you want a boat hook to look like. Was rather pleased to find that one as it's a proper old canal boat item. He's even got a 18ft long Thames hitcher pole (inch diameter thick wall ally tube with a forged iron hook on the end which I can collect at some point as too long for the car. That's a nice item if a little bit ridiculously long.

This little boat hook says it all for me. I managed to save it from the scrap. I know it's unusual for someone to want such a small boat hook but it is indicative of a bigger picture. Its a perfect item. If you wanted a tiny boathook you would never be able to find this. The scrap truck was full of things like that and I feel sad to have witnessed it. We've got a small boat hook which looks similar to that, the school caretaker gave it to me.It was used for opening the high windows in classrooms.

When I needed to replace the shaft of the keb I struggled to find anything of the length I wanted (about 10 ft ).
I ended up with a sapling support from a garden centre at about 7ft.

I have seen a long one on a Dutch barge which was made from two lengths spliced together. Presumably done with some sort of machine as it was very tidy and not obviously two pieces.

I should know better as I have over 15 old forged iron boat hooks mostly magnet finds. I'm a boat hook addict actually. Plus already have a Thames hitcher pole but the scrap man was eyeing up the aluminium tube so I had to reserve it with the owner. It's a nice tool a hitcher pole. Light weight durable and a long reach. A bit bad to weigh that in.

Yes I am familiar with those but this one is quite different. Much more like a boat hook but to be fair it probably is a window hook.

I don't know what my boat hook was originally, it came with the boat but I don't think it was designed as a boat hook. I've not seen another like it.

It is a boat hook. Just a two hook one without a spike. They are useful but I like the ones with sharp spikes for stabbing. Not for self defence (yet) but for picking wood out of the water. You spear it with the spike and just lift it out. Works lovely. Also good for removing waterlogged wood fouling lock gates. That's why I want the hitcher pole because it can do all these things without any trouble. ETA if anyone comes across one of these they turn out to be really handy boat tools. The "boat crook" Quite a short handle about 4ft6 plastic coated ally but a really good tool. The hook is supposed to be more bent but it was like that when I was given it by a Thames lock keeper.
