As regards dredging and maintaining drains to prevent flooding, Holland is a good example. One interesting feature is that they can use flooding as a defence measure and create a giant moat. What - against atom bombs? "We have a moat!" BANG!! goodbye.

On a different, but related matter, I see from the thread that's been running on the subject over on CWDF that the mess at Figure of Three Locks on the Calder & Hebble is being talked about as a massive amount of damage that's going to take a lot of time and money to fix.
Are there some photo's of the damage that I haven't seen ? Am I missing something ?
Apart from the bottom lock run-off weir and channel, and a few stones and copings from the lock-head wall and on either side of it, there doesn't look to be any structural damage at all, . . just mainly a 'muck shifting' job to put all the rubble, sand, gravel and earth back where it should be, . . . which in truth should already be well underway, having first ensured that any washed-out river bank is made good and stabilized as necessary.

Do you think we live in the 19th century and you can just get on with things with no proper planning and safety considerations ??

I must confess to being astounded by the suggestion of 12 to 18 months to repair ... even by C&RT 's own standards, they rebuilt the Middlewich in 9 months.

Rog A similar, if not slightly more extensive, breach a few miles along the New Cut at Church Minshull in the late 1950's was fixed, and the canal open to traffic again, in 5 weeks !

As mentioned surely the constant building on nstural flood plains is a serious contributor to flooding.
I am seeing flooding where it has never flooded before.

"I want to build 300 homes on that nice 30 acre riverside property 10% will be affordable housing and I will build a village social centre as a sweetner" "but it's a flood plain" "That's alright we will build a river wall along the edge of it and we will build a school on the bit of left over land in the corner as another sweetner" "Oh ok then" and the rains come ........ and 120,000 cubic metres of water has no home to go to ........ apart from the poor suckers further down stream

This is precisely what happened with the "Jubilee River" on the Thames. Nice shiny new expensive waterside development in Taplow but the existing Riverside houses further down river flooded.
The advertising for the new housing at Taplow is very scammy. It says "Riverside" when in fact it is beside a man made flood channel which -looks- like a river but isn't.
What a con.
Like I said this is because people who are able to make decisions have fingers in pies.
It's so obvious.

It was built for a housing association and built to the council/EA agreed plans, 2 years later he has to go back for inspection like second snagging, he discovers that all downstairs areas converted to living quarters as well! informs council housing association told to return to plans or they will all be pulled down!! and all the tarmac drives have to be ripped up!! It happened, some people are just to stupid for words
