Went to the big Sainsburys in town today, first time for a while as the queue is normally too long, was waved straight through the doors... Walked back through the High Street and along the towpath, both eerily quiet... Just the same at the very beginning of lockdown.
I find it hard to believe everyone has stayed at home awaiting the relaxations that come into being on Monday...........

Did Washington's other names begin with D. and C. DC - District of Columbia. Washington was actually named after the president.

We thought the Kuusamo - Russian border road was quiet! "Russia has over 405,000 coronavirus infections, the third-highest number in the world. It has reported 4,693 virus deaths, a figure experts call a significant undercount of the true situation." "Finns in the Nordic nation's eastern border region say they haven't seen anything like this since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. The closure of Finland's border with Russia amid the coronavirus pandemic has put an abrupt stop to visits by the nearly 2 million Russian tourists who prop up the local economy each year." "Finland shares a 1,340-kilometer (832-mile) land border with Russia complete with several crossing points in what is one of the European Union's longest external borders. It was shut down both by Helsinki and Moscow in mid-March due to the pandemic. Given Russia's sustained infection rate, there is little hope that the border will be opened for Finland's summer tourism season — and many believe the border will likely remain shut even longer." www.voanews.com/covid-19-pandemic/finland-pain-border-closure-blocks-russian-tourists

Meanwhile in Sweden: "Anders Tegnell, Sweden's state epidemiologist, has admitted he made the wrong call on the country's coronavirus lockdown for the first time. He now believes Sweden should have taken harsher measures to stop the spread."

fascinating stuff!
do you recall 'letter from America' presented by Alistair Cooke?
.................. no, your content and presentation does not compare, but I am sure your readership is absolutely fascinated by what happens in the wild lands to the north-east (NOT!).

The only thing which has really happened in this epidemic is that it has become clear how many people are kept alive artificially by modern medicine.
I wonder if smoking is classed as an underlying health problem.

No, but the version by The Proclaimers was a catchy number. I heard them at Henley festival a few years ago. Quite good actually I was in the canoe with beer and a mad dog at the time did not see the band but the music echoing across the water was pleasant. From Miami to Canadarrr
