Never mind - according to a CRT stoppage notice on 24 Feb: ".. ..third party contractors will be onsite (sic) to carry out a detailed inspection of Bridge 1, Hurleston Bridge, on the Macclesfield Canal." The contractors must have a very clever GPS or the repair to lock 1 at Hurleston is far more far reaching than we thought.

I'm on the upper Peak Forest. Only because the winter mooring here was cheaper than on the Macc, no other great reason to be on this generally uninspiring bit of canal. Unfortunately I'm stuck here indefinitely due to this stoppage, the only other escape route, Marple locks, is closed until at least May, I believe. I hope CRT are at least able to offer a period of 'assisted passage' through Marple before they do what they are going to do.
Talking of CRT, they have stated that the disposal of waste isn't a problem as boaters can access the services along the towpath. Interesting that. If you're moored close to Bollington, where the canal has been closed for some months, you have 2 choices: 1/ Carry your 20KG fully loaded elsan 6 miles to Marple. 2/ Carry said elsan 7 miles to Bosley. There is a public toilet at Higher Poynton, roughly half way between the 2 stoppages but a sign prohibits the emptying of elsans there. Interesting that, I guess Cheshire East council would prefer there to be a nasty niff coming from their generally lovely bit of local canal, rather than boaters' shit being delivered into a waste system that's designed exactly for this purpose.

What have I missed now? Marple buggered again? - I need to get a guest from Huddersfield to Whaley Bridge mid-late May and then by the sounds of things, if the Mac isn't open, go the long way around to Middleport straight after The idea of boating is great... The reality is somewhat different...

If at any point this year you find yourself wishing you had some crew, I would love to help. Especially a mad dash along the Bridgewater etc. Couldn't imagine anything better.

Haha - you could book cruise 7 and assume it'll begin in Whaley Bridge and End in Middleport but go the long way with some longer days...assuming you're not vegan that is... THAT rule is being adhered to

The reality is somewhat different... It's a strange one... a boater I was chatting to yesterday told me one of the locks is closed for repair. Also just been speaking to some CRT guys, they said the same. But, when I search on the CRT site there's no entry for this closure. By the way, CRT bloke says the stoppage at Marple is due to badger sets. They've known about them for years but while previously there were only a couple there are now around a dozen in residence.

Ah, the joys of a powered self pump out with a long hose to the nearest loo or foul manhole, carry nowt, dump all.

"Apparently Marple and Bosley locks are now closed indefinitely as Coombs reservoir feeder has failed leaving no/too little water supply for the Macc/Peak Forest summit..."
"With the closure of the L&L at Bingley due to lack of water, the closure of the Marple and Bosley flights due to lack of water, the closure of the Aire and Calder due to too much water, do we have any hope of using a boat this year on the northern canals?"
"the canal system is a 250 year old , underfunded network that is tumbling into decay and disuse. The government has washed it's hands of it and any hope of a bailout has been wiped out by a virus."
"Having had 6 enjoyable years on the canals I am sad to see the rate of decline but I think there is a lack of organisation."
