The staff in our local shops have not been wearing face masks!! Firstly, they are breathing on the customers, secondly they are not giving themselves protection from customers breathing on them! Ordinary face masks are of no use I think they help a bit, to keep the 'moisture'/droplets coming out of peoples' mouths and noses off yours. And, of course, if I'm in a shop and have a mask on it shows I am trying to keep the moisture from my mouth within the mask. Masks have edges and of course air/viruses can slink in through those. Wearing any mask is better than nothing in my view. I had some little girl sneeze on my neck 4 times two weeks ago in the bus; then I put a big suitcase on that seat, and a big cardboard box on the opposite front seat, to keep the coughing-sneezing brats further away.

a virus is too small to be stopped by an ordinary face mask however I suppose (although I don't know and am only guessing) it might be sufficient to stop larger droplets even if it can't stop aerosol infection
edit ..... different thing for people dealing directly with infected people all the time as opposed to quickly passing someone at a bit closer than the 2 metres
