And if there isn't a second wave then these Nightingale hospitals will just have been the most enormous waste of money which we as taxpayers will have funded. It almost seems blasphemy to criticise NHS spending, in fact the NHS seems to be the 21st century version of God, but since it is our money which funds it then the people who make the decisions should be accountable. Thankfully we have a democracy, and if it means we pay then so be it, there isn't a lot of point in bleating about it. ETA: although to be strictly honest I'd be very pissed off if they shift my pension age again! Err, the first sentence and the second sentence do rather seem to contradict each other.

One of my boys works in an A&E department, he says it's quieter than he's ever known it. Which,I think demonstrates what I've always said many people visit A&E when they don't need to ,end of Phil The last 2 weeks ONS figures point to an excessive number of people dying (more than normal) without Covid-19 on their death certificates. They are possibly dying in homes due to stress and loneliness. The figures are particularly worrying when you consider that lock down should reduce deaths in work place and roads,

She had a very active social life despite being 84 and now she is just stuck indoors, having virtually no human contact. My brother and sister take shopping round but they all dutifully observe the two-metre distancing rule and leave the shopping on her doorstep and stand back. I wouldn't be surprised if lockdown kills her. Of course, you could argue that it's her own fault for being gullible enough to fall for it, but that's what people of her generation are like.

My sister and I have a βfamily video conferenceβ with my mother every few days. She seems to quite like it, despite being 97. She still has her sense of humour - the video call yesterday she appeared on camera wearing a face mask! But she did say she was a bit lonely as, like your mum, she had an active social life. Iβm glad we insisted that she kept the carers coming in for 30 mins once a day. They donβt do much, but they do chat to her for most of the 30 mins. Also her neighbour pops round and sits across the room while they do the Guardian crossword, which might be illegal but is probably for the best.

If my mum (99) gives me the call, what do I say when the old bill stop me on route? Do you mean en route to visit her? You say that you have left your home to provide care or assistance to a vulnerable person (ie your mum) which is one of the quoted reasonable excuses for doing so. Helps if you have a bag of shopping to give to her!

Really? I didn't notice a complete loss of the situation in Italy. I know there were a lot of problems but surely if the healthcare systems are overwhelmed this would mean that death rates would go up in an uncontrollable manner and it would all go pear shaped very badly. Yet in Italy it seems to have all sorted itself out. So what is happening ?In Italy - one of my wife's good friends died a week ago, her husband died 3 weeks ago (only found out a few days ago as I hardly knew them) - they leave behind 2 children only 7 or 8 years older than yours.
Both the people who died were working at the local hospital and had been doing so for over 20 years.
4th time I've tried to respond to someone with this info - not sure why but it is now out there......
That is sad, I did wonder about numbers of health care workers in places like Italy that were lost to this disease. It all overwhelmed so quickly number wise those infected in the population I've always wanted to know how much protective equipment was bothered with early on...before the knowledge of what they were dealing with was known.

Hey!... I found you a cool avatar, the forum cat doesn't have a great provenance for you? Use something else and begin to belong, you might feel like staying a bit longer. ...or not. I was thinking of using this pic.

@blacksheep Oh yes. Boris will come out of the woodwork and suddenly look all statesmanlike, pay this barbour another oner to wreck the hair a little bit more and announce "it's ok, we have passed the peak, I can announce that the lockdown will be lifted. Go and enjoy the sunshine knowing that we sorted it all out". It would be funny if this didn't happen. I'll get my coat... You're waxing lyrical... By the way, you are a taxi.
