I don't think Jenlyn is hard enough to be a proper CMer. Much more likely to be a cc er me thinks

a little bit of water can be quite effective. (Edited to remove incorrect procedure). I have to ask : WTF's "tape water"? Brake fluid used to be the substance of choice when engines required regular de-coking. Mainly on petrol engines, though.

Tape water is water you get from tape worms.
Quite a complex process to extract the worms from the host and then press them the extract the water.
Well worth the effort however.

The Curse of the Continuous Moorer. Valves all gummed up. Rather the curse of those who use their boat as a home rather than a toy ... drawn out of the toy box for a few weeks then carefully put away. Unfair on you I know. But your comment was grossly unfair too. Rog

Sorry!

The reply, well...🙄 I don't see naughtyfox 's comment as any better or worse than the stick he gets, eg Blakey, from some of us, oily handed migrant that he is. Best not go near dogless knees either.

To be fair it is well known that putting a lot of hours on a diesel engine without giving it "work" can cause problems with certain power units.
Some are better than others and it partly depends on engine operating temperature ie if the engine tends to take a long time to warm up you will get more wear and more problems in general.
It's probably related to a lack of use for vessel propulsion however I do note the recent circumstances re moving boats for pleasurable reasons. The timing may not be a fluke.

Yes, it does make sense, . . and along with the regular frequency of the 'popping', it points to the cause being less likely to be a valve sticking in it's guide due to carbon build-up on the stem, and rather more likely to be some muck or carbon on a valve seat holding one inlet valve slightly open and off it's seat. There's a simple test you can do to check if this is the probable cause. With the air cleaner removed and the stop control set to 'stop' - if there's an 'energized to run' electric stop solenoid on the injection pump, disconnect and temporarily tape over the +ve feed wire to it at the pump end - then have someone crank the engine over on the key for you whilst you get your ear as close as possible to the inlet manifold and listen for a hissing sound as the affected cylinder goes through it's compression stroke. I've put a litre of redex in the tank, and dropped some into the inlet manifold. Set the tappets to the manufacturer advice and left it overnight. Started it this morning and seems a lot better. So I suspect you're right about carbon on the seat. I'll run it for a day or two and see if the snake oil sorts it. If not, strip down and repair I guess. and: I'll see if I can get some normfest or similar and give it a dose of that. Bloody isuzu parts are hard to get, so I might be looking at a new engine. I don't want to go down that route until this bitching virus calamity sods off. I wouldn't be in too much hurry to either write the engine off or even embark on a top overhaul. Assuming that the problem is muck of some sort on at least one inlet valve seat, and given the sort of use your engine gets - generally light load and low rpm - it's very unlikely there will have been any wear, burning or damage to any of the valves or seats due to the relatively low temperatures that inlet valves and seats run at in an under worked diesel. The problem will probably sort itself out after a few more hours running, especially if the engine can be given a few hours working a good bit harder than usual. If it doesn't improve, or does the same thing again after a short while, it might be as well to have the injectors out and get them tested and/or serviced as necessary. Worn, dirty or sticking injector nozzles can lead to incomplete and sooty combustion on light load even in the absence of any visible exhaust smoke, and may well have contributed to some excessive carbon formation in the combustion chambers and around the valve seats. Also, if parts for that Isuzu model are getting scarce and expensive, it might be as well to invoke Sod's Law to assist with cleaning up your valve seats by ordering a top overhaul gasket set and keeping it in stock.
