Dogs don't normally mess with moles..dunno whether its the smell or taste. Mums dogs used to occasionally find one but would soon drop it...
And talking of toad saw large one this am on top of the hill sitting on a wall..to start with I thought it was a dumped ornament then it crawled off into shrubs....unfortunately I was chatting to little sis and couldn't use camera.. Lovely walk though..all the first time fledglings still being fed by mum n dad.. Going early I think you see more than later when there are dogs, cyclists n joggers all 'social distancing(ha ha) on narrow cliff paths.
Son went down to the front last night and came back to say there was a group of ole boys each with a pint sitting along sea wall..suppose normally they would meet in a pub.

I guess it must have been a visual warning to other moles not to fuck with the land owners... I'm struggling to create a picture in my head of such bestial activity. Please could you elucidate?

Gamekeepers and mole catchers traditionally used to hang up the bodies of their victims ... I think it was more to demonstrate their abilities to potential customers than to deter wildlife. Of course it wasn't customary to do the same with poachers Rog

The practice of catching and keeping a crow etc. in a 'crow trap' to entice other carrion to come to feed and meet the gamekeeper, really upset Jane the first time she encountered it.
Mind you she initially thought the nice man was keeping a pet crow, until I explained the system.

They do a similar thing with pheasants as well.
And I am led to believe other more protected species of birds when it is quiet enough, saw enough to have suspicions but never enough to report...

I'm obviously being dim, but don't understand what you're saying. It is customary to hang pheasant, and other game, in preparation for the table. To what are you referring ? Rog

Peasants. Make for good shooting sport on large country estates. Bang! An owl falls out of a tree.

Peasants. Make for good shooting sport on large country estates. you have to hang a peasant for 21 days before it's fit for consumption.

Rog The price for a day shoot on a top pheasant shooting estate - one gun equals one paying customer per day - they are allowed to take home a brace but any more than that costs more money Many americans fly in for the 'game' hence the price is in dollars.
