I was out in the dinghy last evening a little bit the worse for wear in beer terms and i decided to see what the angry swan would do if I did not get away quickly. I was not approaching it, I was passing. I quite like to watch their aggressive behaviour but this time I discovered what they can do. It was fluffing up and getting all aggressive then it sneaked round behind me and hit my arm very hard with its wing. Like someone hit it with a hammer. This did make me go away Today I can barely lift anything with that arm. It was the steering arm for the dinghy motor. Struck just behind the elbow. I was amazed how hard it was able to strike me. It's possible it's a fracture but I think/hope not... Impressive. I was winding it up but at no point did I get anywhere close to the cygnets. Nowhere near them and no threat. Just an angry swan at the end of the day. With a hammer in its wing.

I did nothing to it. I was going away from it with no threat level but I was going slowly. I've encountered plenty of swans but this one is unusually aggressive.
Put it this way on another occasion I was in the dinghy with the kids and it flew from around 300 metres away to annoy us, leaving the female and the nest way behind for someone else to go and raid...
It's just a nuisance bird.

You visit its home and then call the bird a nuisance ?
Are you sure it wasn't a peck ?

You visit its home and then call the bird a nuisance ? Are you sure it wasn't a peck ? Rog It is about a mile away from it's usual area. It doesn't come down here much. I was nowhere near its home. I think it was the wing probably. I doubt they have that much force in a peck. A real whack like a hammer blow but as it was behind me at the time I am unsure exactly what happened. It did me a favour actually as the drinking is becoming a problem and something like this can help focus the mind. Time for a ride on the wagon Must say the London birds are far more aggressive than out on the Thames in Berkshire where I had the cygnets pecking my fingers and the parent swans totally unbothered by it all. They say swans are clever. I've seen one, probably this one, a few years ago being beaten by someone in a kayak with a paddle. Eventually the swan drove the kayak to the bankside man got out and swan sunk kayak. But that man was attacking the bird. I was not. Difference. I guess all small boats are a threat to that bird now so same treatment for everyone.

Years ago I used to do sprint canoeing, I had been feeding a swan some of my sandwiches over a period of time at a race event, on the finales the swan visited the starting line just as the off gun was fired, [it was looking for food from me] the start turned into chaos with only two of us getting away, I won and it was upheld after a stewards inquiry. I later rewarded the swan for his norty ways and my win with a whole pack of sarnies

Isn't nature wonderful ... making bird bones hollow and lightweight to assist with flight ... yet still able to apply a 'karate chop' sufficient to break a humans limb ... it's almost magic Rog
