Yes Julian I know his sons Steve and Tony they are a lot richer now than then! Keith a friend worked for Victor at one point, he berated him for using nails that were to long and throwing one away when it bent, Victor straightened it telling Kieth how much it had cost. Because of him we have the big locks on the S and SY, they were paid for by European money that the labour Government of the time tried to use the money for something else, but Victor stopped it. The upgrade was finished in 1983, deeper channel and 700 ton locks and new depots, the one in Rotherham is called AWA if you turn it the other way up its Victor Waddington BW refused to allow him to have a depot as a punishment for upgrading the canal, but victor got around it. He was kind and gave houses to employees to retire in, he was a very hard businessman he is I suspect one of a kind

I met him in his office in 1980 or thereabouts ... he was absolutely terrifying.
You really wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of him.
But he was incredibly knowledgeable and very generous in a quiet, discreet way ... an indomitable character of his time and had no patience with BW.
