I remember the 70s and the winter of discontent.
Just saving other posters from typing it out.
Off to pick up my sadly not discounted KFC - yet!

It wouldn't have mattered what Labour spent the money on pre Covid
The money would be gone post Covid and not available for trying to re-start the economy.
You might argue that some of the schemes of the present administration are not very good and that may or not be proven to be correct but you are missing the point that if it wasn't for them, it would not be now available to try and kick start the economy.
Money should only be spent like this (a bit like FDR in the 40's) when the times are very very bad following a major disaster.
Labour have a proven record of frittering this "rainy day money" when the sun is shining and just keeping their fingers crossed that it will stay dry.
edit to say that reading the post by ricco just a few minutes before mine ..... I must learn to type faster
I am no fan of Labour. I simply point out that somebody who can afford to buy, outright, a house costing upwards of 2 million pound requires no help from the taxman. It just can’t be right.

My neice and her husband are buying a larger house (three girls 8 and twins of 6 years) for obvious reasons ... they're very pleased with the suspension of stamp duty ... a saving of close to £10k for them.
Jane's sister has been made redundant ... and new employment isn't a given at the moment in her region.
2020 so far is a year that renders political parties irrelevant ... I suspect government actions have been pretty much dictated by world events and whichever party was in power we'd pretty much be in the same position.
I still hope the 'recovery' will be swifter as the economy was simply 'switched off' rather than depressed by economics ... but time alone will tell.
Winners and losers as with any situation.

I reckon making food at the supermarket half price would have been better.
Eating out is a luxury that nobody needs. It's totally unnecessary.
On the other hand food on the plate is something that everyone needs. Or in a bowl. Or on a wooden platter whatever you choose to contain the food you basically need it as a human.
It's not an optional thing.

Doing our bit, eaten out a couple of times since the reopening. All seems pretty well organised. Looking at the recent data covid is pretty well under control. Let’s hope we can keep it that way. As you said Roger, this is a different type of recession and we may bounce back faster than we think.

It's not an optional thing. Indeed. It amazes me that eating out has been such a growth area. Pay 12 quid for someone to cook something for you that costs 2 quid, or less in many cases. I eat out a lot in Indonesia, twice every day. But I'm only paying 2-2.50 including a drink when the ingredients would cost over a quid. Over here, once you've paid 6 or more times the cost of what you're given you then have the 'pleasure' of paying another 12 quid for a shitty bottle of wine, one that you could buy for 4 quid odd in one of our many supermarkets.

I was talking to Richard today at the Bar in the basin, CRT are doing their very best to close him down! Why you may ask? its because he is using the open area outside to socially distance people, its a communal space so he has spread his benches and tables far and wide! The police and licensing love it he has 5 easily cleaned portaloos outside which make life easier as nobody needs to go into his bar. Yet CRT who want his rent of course are just being arses of the first water which is what I have learned to expect from them. He has sent an email with reference to the police and Licensing but I expect CRT will just still insist he closes down but keeps on paying.............they are total tossers

tossers is a good description
Last year after the Waterways Museum closed, the Yorkshire ex Working boat society decided to hold their annual gathering as normal. Mooring along with the Museum's craft that were still moored there so leaving the visitors moorings further down free for "smaller" boats ...... The administrators were quite happy about it as we cleared the litter, cut the grass and generally tidied up the front. two days later the ladies from the administration company came down and apologising effusively about it, gave each of us a letter demanding we moved off the moorings ..... on the instructions of CRT !!!
The only result of this was that we then blocked the visitors moorings (two of the boats were over 100 foot) ..... just spiteful behaviour .... exactly what I have come to expect from that bunch of tossers

I do wonder how many people will vote for an Indian prime minister in 2028. Probably quite a lot in India. Although we all know the elections are rigged there. Backsheesh! Backsheesh! Make a fuss and they'll send someone round to slit your throat. The throat-cutters also cover themselves in grease so if you catch them you loose your grip. Slimy.

To be fair there are probably less throat slitters in India than there are in the vast majority of countries in the world. What there are though, are possibly some of the most zealous police. I was only there for a month last time but that was long enough to see a French guy get an absolute pasting from the police because he was accused of running a hotel without a work permit. This was before arrest or trial. I guess they were softening him up. And then an old bloke at a railway station got a proper beating off 2 girls, police, for the crime of falling asleep without having a valid ticket. The police are certainly working hard towards cleaning things up over there.

Well, maybe the Indian police should beat up all their corrupt politicians.
