I reckon a derelict canal with a much wider path, some vegetation and a channel of say 6ft width for the ducks would actually be a very nice local amenity.
Much more useable for ordinary public than at the moment where they are squeezed into tiny narrow paths often with idiot zombie cyclists blasting around.
How about this for an idea: Leave existing towpath for zombies, partially infill the waterway to provide a second path closer to the water for walkers then a nice shallow duck channel. Maybe some fountains here and there and dewatered locks could be made into adventure playgrounds with interpretation boards and pictures of horses.
There arrrr endless possibilities if you could get rid of fly in the ointment which is boats.
It could be a really nice linear park for everyone to enjoy and be funded by local authorities.

Maybe CaRT want walkers and cyclists but not boaters... That's exactly right, Patty, . . and unless there is some positive and resolute action on the part of boaters to prevent them from achieving their goal, there soon won't be any inland waterways maintained to a standard fit for anything other than angling, or cycling and walking along ! I should add to the above remarks that forums such as this, . . minus the input from the negatively minded windbags, . . could be a good starting point for drumming up support for an effective and well targeted campaign against C&RT's wilful neglect of the waterways.

Of course there are also a few people who have already ditched crt waterways and may therefore no longer give a remote toss about the canal system.

Cyclists and Ramblers Trust? This has been suggested yes. Would people still want to use the canal towing path amenity if there were no moving boats? Do people like lines and lines of moored boats or do they want to see the water? It's certainly interesting to see how things develop. Would derelict locks be good picnic sites perhaps? A partially derelict canal might actually be better because the type of boaters using it would be those who can deal with a bit of adversity and the spineless windbags might go elsewhere. We have a derelict lock. Great for a bbq and for swimming. But it is on the beautiful river itchen and not a canal.

A neglected waterway is not appealing..canals would become more of a dumping ground than they are now We need to protect our canal system for everyones use..boaters , pedestrians and responsible cyclists...

CaRT do carry out repairs to the infrastructure, and they say so in their annual reports. But what has actually been done and reported as such is really quite nebulous inasmuch as all they are forthcoming with is a pie chart and a few banner headlines. Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me much if it turned out the entire allocated segment of the budget for the last financial year went on Todmorton.
Given CaRT's track record with FOI requests a concerted effort from a determined party to wrest the details from their ledgers would be a good thing.
Not Tony, they'll just ignore him.

Talking to an experienced ex lockie now a wagon driver, my local area is now dealt with by lads from Burnley who know nothing of the ins and outs, the foibles of the canal locally. They opened a feed up at Summit, nearly washed a wash wall away cos they didn't inspect the outflow first. The knowledge drain, down to too many shiny chaired chiefs and their mismanagement skills, is criminal.
