When we were cruising back down the upper Thames a while back there was an almighty bang followed by rapidly reducing revs and black smoke. What's the first thing I thought? Engine blown!
My instinct was to put the gearbox in neutral. As I did so, I noticed the revs pick up and the black smoke stop. It was only then I realsied that something might have jammed the prop. I gave it a little blip at tickover in reverse only to see a small log pop out of the back. Fortunately there was no damage to the prop so we continued with our journey.
What if the gearbox has been direct drive?
