We often go to France as misses and children are French but I've never been to Germany - this could be a valid reason - or find a blacksmith over here to copy them

just a bit of fflat bar with an eye forged on one end, whats the loose bit of metal for? how do they work, what advantage? that forged eye would get well battered being hammered into the ground.
FFlat? my keyboard is going wellllsh!

I expect they are from telegraph poles or something.
It looks to me like they would be more effective than round pins because they would gave more resistance to being pulled out.
True about the peening over at the top above the eye - might not be ideal for everyday use but maybe as an option for occasional use when extra security is required.

Do you have a cruise liner or a narrowboat?? Just moors on a soft bank with lots of speeding boats (both private and hire) passing? I've amended that for you.

The flat has reduced resistance to bending than the upper bar, it would bend at the change in profile.

The flat has reduced resistance to bending than the upper bar, it would bend at the change in profile. I'm not sure about that. The items I linked to seem to be fairly large and probably quite thick I could see a welded alternative bending but I think a properly made hand forged version would be pretty strong. I tie up with ex army ratchet straps (4 pins with spring line type arrangement 2 of them tensioned up with the ratchet straps) when on pins to avoid the forward and back jerking which tends to rip mooring pins out. I'd like a pair of those type of earth anchors in the arsenal of mooring weaponry aboard. (MJG - I have a 30 tonne 57x12ft barge so nothing particularly big)

For cheapness I make my own out of angle which I find holds better than round bar. I think I need to buy a couple of ground anchor type things to add to my own personal armory.

Watch it Jim - if the Canalworld mods see you on here, you're toast! But then they would be on here too, and have to ban themselves, condemned to thunderboat forever.
