In relation to silting of any part of the Trent caused by major flooding of the sort we had last Winter, . . . what exactly do you mean by the term - "pinch point" ? I met 'Humber Survey' on the Trent on Monday, so something going on, I am interested in these discussions btw Jo Humber Survey is ABP's survey launch, . . nothing to do with C&RT. ABP are the harbour and navigation authority for the Trent up to Gainsborough Bridge, and although shipping running up to Gainsborough (low profile coasters) is now just a distant memory - over 30 years now since it finished - they still survey it every couple of years or so, . . and maintain pretty well all the lights, plus the laying-over dolphins at Burringham and Derrythorpe.

The Trent is on our plan for the future. Once kris has pinpointed his pinch-points we'll aim for the middle and hope for the best! I'm sorry to have to disillusion you, Ross, but these so-called siltation/dredging ''pinch points'' are nothing but a figment of Kris's imagination Yes, I was just joking. When we get round to the Trent I shall re-study it - but it's 3 or 4 years in the future, and we might change our plans anyway.

Re "pinch points", if the river narrows won't the flow speed increase so no sediment will collect there?

I'll have to ask Evangeline about this.
Prior to working for the service she was admin in a hydrological survey company.
It's amazing how much admin end up knowing when you realise how little they are paid !

Get a grip. I see you got away with a very swear word on analworld, norty boy. Surprised teacher didn't put you over his knee and spank your naked buttocks with a hair brush. (on reflection, given your skuling, that would be a rabbit in the briar patch affair 🙄.) They can't stop talking about us either. Jealous of the freedom, stuck behind the barriers in their minds.

Re "pinch points", if the river narrows won't the flow speed increase so no sediment will collect there? Not if you believe the man who started this thread ! Asked on page 1 : - "Do they dump the dredged stuff or do they have to treat it?" - his answer was : - "They just let it go, to flow down stream if they are spot dredging". That reply brought the further question : - " . . . so does it then silt up further down?", to which he replied : - "Yes, at the pinch points."So, there you have it, . . . did the engineers and the navigation authorities who took active measures to deepen the navigation channel of rivers such as the Trent and Ouse during the 19th and early 20th Centuries by narrowing the river's natural channel where the speed of the current was insufficient to promote natural scouring get it all wrong ? Would they have done a much better job if they had been fortunate enough to have Kris around to advise them ?

not a link .... a quote .... I won't go there even for that Jim Riley I was only asking for a link, so as not to have to shift through all the uttertosh and hogwash over there. But if they are saying things about thunderboat it would be good to know. Here you go, some snippets. "TB is pretty uninteresting due to the low posting numbers" "TB was born out of the fallout on CWDF so it’s no surprise it was talked about. Lots of water under the bridge since then and most people that are on both post without problem. There’s a few on both who seemingly can’t let it go, but that’s not helpful to anyone. If you don’t like the place and you are not a member, simply don’t go there." "I suggest you ask the mods to ban Thunderboat, then you would be happy. Oh wait a minute, they can’t. How annoying and frustrating for you that you can’t silence people you don’t approve of!" "both forums provide entertainment and information" "There's not a lot of activity on their CWDF thread. I think they got bored with it. There's not a great deal of activity anywhere on TB, and most is the same few people (like it is on our political bit). I nip over every now and then to see if anything interesting is happening, and come back here because not much there interests me." "Thunderboat itself is alive and kicking as a forum" "'Over there' the slagging off of this forum is/was done on a dedicated board, and I'm sure elsewhere throughout. 'On here' the slagging off of TB is sprinkled throughout various boards and threads." www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/107141-postings-on-cwdf/page/10/ Overall, it's pretty much of a nothing-to-be-discussed. And that's a pint you owe me, kris, for that research. (My view is that both forums' members are getting older and older, and new members are needed on both).

(My view is that both forums' members are getting older and older, and new members are needed on both). A bit like the canals then. It is the elephant in the room. Are there sufficient numbers of younger people interested in the waterways specially the heritage side of it and general fusiasm for it or will they do other things?
