I don't get why all new houses are built with solar panels as standard, if the house is pointing the right way of course.. We have panels on our roof at home, but they don't generate any electricity, instead we pump water up and in the summer months it provides nearly all our hot water.

I wasn't complaining, and fully appreciate every day how fortunate we are ... but I'm not apologising either. I was just explaining what had prompted my re-evaluation of solar. Having chosen not to sell or rent out the house, we always have the option of 'going home' but after 15 years spending nine months onboard, we consider the boat IS our home ... hence we were locked down at Nantwich for nine weeks. It's been a strange year for everyone, and one I hope isn't repeated. Rog Still; we have knocked naughtyfox score out the park ๐๐๐ป Yeah well, we drove around Senja island this summer. Oh - and walked the Little Bear Circuit near Kuusamo.

Still; we have knocked naughtyfox score out the park ๐๐๐ป Yeah well. Question for Foxy. Why do you crop posts like I have done with yours? It gives a totally different context and spin on what the person you are quoting to said. dogless has repeatedly asked you not to do it to his posts - it amazes me with your phenomenal post count that you haven't managed to take onboard this small bit of etiquette and courtesy.

The usual cause of having to run an engine if youโve got solar is knackered batteries. Well after a day like this is it. Or a cannabis grow room on the boat. I had a geyser moored opposite on a 70ft wide bean vessel completely covered with solar and all day he had a little diesel generator running. Continuously. That's not a battery problem that is a high power consumer of some sort on board. Strange because in the evenings there were hardly any lights on. I suppose it could just have been that he took the view that constant power availability from diesel is a reasonable way to run a floating apartment. It's quite reliable I suppose. Luxury yachts will have generators going all the time it's perfectly normal...

Maybe in a marina on shore power. Or is this another one of your โoperations,โ to go along with the people smuggling?

Maybe you fit the solar, it's going so well you see it has surplus capacity and buy a bigger 240v fridge to run on an inverter. Then it's underpowered and you're back where you started running the engine/genny but you have a bigger fridge.

It was during the "shoulder season" when it occurred when the solar isn't that effective. I just couldn't get my head round how someone could use so much power on an off grid boat. But I expect it's quite normal to be fair. It's just me that is odd in that respect.

That's why I have resisted solar so far ... our requirements (other than a 12v fridge) are minimal ... led lights, usual pumps, phone and tablet charging being our only other need.
I don't like the big tilting panels that 'take-off' in the wind and look horrible in my view.
We cruise for our charging and hot water.
However the lock-down period made me re-think, and looking at the technology, the panels are much more efficient, can be much less obtrusive, and even cheaper.
Our demands for power won't change ... but on a none cruising summer day(s) maybe the fridge won't be so demanding.

Our boat is 27 years old and we've had it for 16 years ... it's served us well and suits our boating life style.
I have no intention or interest in retrospectively rebuilding the boat to conform with someone elses measure of what a boat 'needs' to be or have.
If a couple of 150w solar panels can be fitted unobtrusively, I may go for it ... we shall see.

Again rather than getting themโstuck down.โ Iโd recommend ridgedly mounted about four -six inches off the roof. Still look unobtrusive, but the panels working more efficiently. I agree by the way about the tilting monstrosities. They are exspensive, flimsy and to be honest you only get benefit from tilting panels in winter. When unless youโve got loads of panels and really low power consumption, you are going to be running an engine or generator to keep your batteries in good condition anyway.

Plus the flexible ones stuck to the roof tend to fail quite quickly. I've seen them in bins more than once.
