Bloody hell Iconoclast, that isn't half an improvement on "Desiree" .... you must be well chuffed Yes, it looks a lot better already, unlike a professional signwriting job it doesn't really stand close scrutiny, but from a normal viewing distance it's passable... it's going to take a few more days to finish it off because the paint is taking longer to dry than I'd projected, as it's on the side that doesn't get any sun, but I'm not working next week so I've got plenty of time to do it, and all it has cost so far is £6.50 for a tin of white enamel paint.

Excellent looking work, Dude!
By the time you're done that's going to look as good as any professional job.

Nice one. Give me a shout next time you're up north, mine needs a similar paint job!

Quick update, I've almost finished Stage 1, just a few bits of shadowing to do this afternoon, then I'm going to leave it a few days to dry properly, then neaten it all up a bit, and put a second coat on where needed. It's not perfect by any means, but I think it looks better, it cost virtually nothing to do, and I enjoyed doing it.

Whimsical hat on.
I've often thought about human skills, particularly where this sort of skill is involved. Anyone can be taught to write books, design the next iphone, fly aeroplanes, cut down the right tree etc. How on earth someone can signwrite freehand, albeit with the aid of a timpani drumstick, is comletely beyond me!

I agree - and watching someone do it is fascinating, only managed to see it being done like that a couple of times. @ic - well putting our differences aside for a sec. that is a pretty good damn effort. It has smartened the panel up massively.

All I did was to go over what was already there, there is no way I would be able to sign write from scratch, and it is fascinating to watch a signwriter in action, as we did this year at the Crick show.

Actually, it's not a bad idea, that as you have just changed jobs and are 'free', you could take up boat sign-writing. If you like it, that is. From what I have seen, sign-writers for the canals are always in demand, once you have mostly mastered the skill and the tricks it could be a steady source of income for you. Worth thinking about, anyway. If nothing else, you could contact some sign-writers and ask if you can spend a day with them watching what they do, so that you can get the idea what it's all about. A heated dry dock could be quite a nice work environment in winter.
