Our kids are wanting ideas for gifts to buy us for a coming anniversary. We currently just use out phones to access the net, there are occasions when the signal inside boat is poor though. So, what do we need to allow better access? A dongle thing?

A router with provision for an external aerial connection(s), an external aerial and an extendable pole would be my first choice. Huawei have a good selection of routers.
We use a tel-tonika router with a poynting xpol antenna on an extendable decorators pole.
ETA. Obviously if there is no signal at all, it won't make any difference, but can make significant difference bringing a signal inside, via cable, to a steel narrowboat shell.
ETA again. If you put your sim in a router, there are some types that will allow you to connect a telephone handset to utilise any inclusive minutes you may have.Otherwise it means faffing around swapping the sim with your mobile phone. The alternative is, you get a dedicated data sim, or lose the minutes.

When this comes up on other boaty forums nearly everyone goes on about Huawei routers and how good they are (until China takes over the world and your router kills you) and how EE smacks the bottom of 3. External aerial a must. I had to spellcheck aerial. Dementia must be imminent. Antenna is a much better word.

Huawei E3131 dongle doesn't use any additional power and has a port to accept an aerial. I bought a new one off Ebay last month Ā£15.00. 3g and 2g only.

Happy days.
