With modern synthetic rope, a long splice can be almost impossible to do well, as the strands can untwist, even when the ends are sealed. I see that the video maker uses the "right over left" short cut for that reason, and has carefully chosen a rope which maintains its twist. Sometimes neater, quicker and losing less rope, to do a short splice, and taper the ends, either by the traditional halfing the strands, or the "Californian Taper" where one strand stops, the other two make an extra tuck, and the one on the right (if you're splicing away from you) makes another extra tuck. Do you consider poly-hemp rope to be suitable for a splice? Yes, for anything except a "proper" long splice, where, rather than overlapping the strands and tucking, the strand being laid is tapered, after which the strand it is replacing is tapered and worked back along the replacement stand, twisting them together. Difficult even with natural fibre rope, but is undetectable if done well.

Is a long splice appropriate for canal boat ropes? I get the feeling that it would be inherently weaker than a short splice and as canal boat ropes can be subjected to quite high loads perhaps it would not be the ideal solution.
Maybe if done well it would be ok. I've never tried a long splice but thought it was more of a sailing boat thing.

Actually the sailing world has largely abandoned traditional ropes, but the need to create splices still exists. Doing so with Dyneema and Marlowbraid (other brands are probably available) is a totally different kettle of parsnips. The long splice is fine - its strength lies in the fact its, er, long. Or so I've always thought. I shall have to research this now, damn your eyes.

Apparently doctors prescribe ibuprofen for this sort of thing. If it carries on much longer I will get it checked out. Looks like it's not an OTC option and as I am someone who does not visit the quack until I am half dead I guess it will be ibuprofen for me at least for now. You can get extra strength co-codamol otc, but you have to work for it. Even if you want something as prosaic as aspirin (or aspirin and codiene), which by the way I think is still the best off-the-shelf painkiller. Ibuorofen is some sort of placebo as far as I can see. Bloody useless. Tell the pharmacist you've had a hip replacement and ask for 'Tylenol Extra Strength' but if they won't play the game you can get it mail order: www.discounthealthproducts.com/product/tylenol-extra-strength-rapid-release-one-box-of-290-liquid-gels/You can get Naproxen this way too: www.discounthealthproducts.com/product/kirkland-naproxen-sodium-220mg/

Feminax ultra is a good one as well.
I used to get Cocodamol effervescent no problems.
Today my friend got me some ibuprofen codeine tablets as I was unable to go out to the shops this morning.

It's a real nuisance when you get someone who doesn't understand that passing on the "wrong side" is appropriate in certain situations. Obviously it takes a bit of knowledge to work it out quickly and even if you did do two blasts of your horn he was probably too ignorant to know what that means. I heard an idiot recently blasting his horn twice as he entered a narrow backwater which leads to a marina. He was in a reasonably wide boat, a Sealine 40 or similar. If I had been coming the other way I would assume that his intention was to pass green to green for some reason perhaps due to his draught. What he meant was "my boat is coming" for which the correct sounding is one long blast, which also indicates your intention to pass any oncoming traffic as usual. You missed out 5 short blasts. Colregs for 'What are you doing? you fucking idiot' I'm paraphrasing a bit but there we are 😁👍

Perhaps you have bile stones, or kidney stones? What's wrong with you - slipped disc? I think it's either slipped disc or pulled muscle. I did a twattish lift of my older daughter up to a playground device the other day. Got it wrong did not use my legs enough. Simple mistake. I did wonder about the kidney stones myself but I think it's muscle as I get those spasms. Probably be ok in a few days.

Just noticed Feminax Ultra IS Naproxen. I successfully managed to acquire this once by entering the chemist looking slightly chastened and telling them the woman was having a bad time of the month The painkillers were for me... I bet they guessed.

Just one warning about Naproxen it can have a bad effect on your stomach lining if taken for an extended time. There are tablets to be taken at the same time to alleviate this but I can't remember their name. Its more common when taking 500mg morning and night as I sometimes have to do.
